Planning a trip to Maui?  Don't take the Hana Highway!Almost everyone who comes to Maui as a visitor used to be encouraged to take the "road to Hana" for a once in a lifetime experience. It's famous for the 52 or so single lane bridges, stunning vistas, tropical jungle and white knuckle hair-pin curves.  But that was then and this is now...First of all, you may have to pass through the National Guard checkpoint at Twin Falls, where they'll ask you what your business is.  Are you driving to Hana?  Is it absolutely necessary?  If you're driving a Mustang or Jeep, it's probably not that important that you proceed. If you decide to continue on your journey, be prepared to encounter lots of opposition, and not many smiling faces like in the old days. You might find this guy near the start of t...

Take a quick drive up Awalau Road in Haiku MauiIt won't take long to drive the mile or so from the famous Hanzawa's Store to the end of the road.  It's a charming little country road with tall trees and tropical plants lining the road.Today we were helping a friend with his little cattle ranch (17 acres) so I decided to film some of the drive to help show you what Awalau Road looks like.  This is really the country - with small and large farms, some beautiful country estates, and some simple homes too.For anyone looking for a peaceful lifestyle where you can really sprawl out and do your own thing, this part of Maui is the right fit.  It's very laid back, with a mix of people who love their privacy, love to be with nature, and maybe own some horses or other livestock.  You can usually f...

Colorful tropical ti leaves in the Maui sunshineWhat can I say, it's Monday and sometimes a little lightness is required.  These are ti plants, and the leaves are called ti leaves, but not the kind you make a drink from.  The leaves have many uses here in Hawaii and almost every yard will have some growing.  They say it's good luck to plant one at every corner of your house.  You can't really have too many because they are useful for cooking, serving food, decorating, making lei and other crafts, and more.  With a wide variety of colors and sizes, it's fun to collect many different types in your garden.  Rugged and easy to grow, they can take a lot of abuse and still be healthy.Learn more about TI PLANTSGrow your own ti leaves in Haiku Maui after you find a home to buy. Thanks for readi...

Getting creative with driftwood and junk in Haiku Maui. What do you get when you take some driftwood, corks, and heavy guage wire?  A fun fish to hang on the wall!  A neighbor had a driftwood party and invited a bunch of us over to get creative.  She went to a lot of bother to gather piles of driftwood, and soak it and dry it to get rid of any creepy crawlies.  We were inspired with all the woods, scraps of wires, rocks, shells, and other fun things to put together.  Glue guns, power tools, drills and what not were all available, with experienced helpers to show us how to use them.  It was a fun party, and great way to get neighbors together on a weekend.  Of course food and adult beverages were also in good supply, and the chatter was lively.  Everyone had so much fun being creative an...

Tis the season for shell ginger flowers on MauiThese lovely plants like to show off their beautiful blooms at this time of year, in the Hawaiian Islands.  Shell ginger, like others in the ginger family, do well in a warm tropical garden, so you know they love to thrive in Haiku.  No irrigation needed if you plant them in a suitable spot. It's a tallish plant and these were at eye level, making it easy to admire them.I snapped this pic while touring some Maui homes for sale last week.  This flower was seen at Maluaina Place, a quiet street in Peahi, a part of Haiku.  See some other new north shore Maui listings and learn more by clicking this link.Read more about Maui on my MauiHunter Blog here. Thanks for reading my Maui blog...Buying or selling real estate on Maui?  That's what I do.  L...

Aerial shot of Huelo and Waipio Bay on Maui's north shoreHuelo, Waipio, Honokala - Haiku Maui from the airIt's a big wide shot of this beautiful coastal scenery along Maui's north shore.  You won't see this from the Road to Hana, but with a drone flying camera it's possible. This is the coastline on the top of the eastern flank between Paia and Keanae, showing the typical terrain of seaside cliffs punctuated with mountain streams in steep gorges.  The land drops away quickly offshore as well, making for deep ocean currents just a short way out.We love it here because it's just a more natural way to live, surrounded by all the greenery, ocean breezes, soft rainfall, with ocean views and forever blue skies. The climate, the food, the friendly people, I could go on and on.You might have a...

Phantom 4 ready for take off to film 460 Hoolawa Rd, MauiThe weather has been pretty nice in Haiku Maui lately so we were able to get the Phantom 4 up in the air for some new aerial footage and snap shots to showcase my oceanfront listing at 460 Hoolawa Rd.  You really need to see this from the air to appreciate the outrageous cliff top setting and the dramatic location.  This little flying camera does a great job!Watch a short video of 460 Hoolawa Rd.This 2.3 acre parcel is oceanfront at the end of a country road, within a 5 lot subdivision.  It's an off-grid community where everyone gets it, and they know how to live sustainably by using solar power and catchment or well water.  Life is a little simpler here, making for an easy-going lifestyle in tune with nature and the seasons. What ...

Papayas are a favorite tropical fruit around the world. We are blessed with a bounty of papayas this season, despite the wet winter.  It seems the rich soil from the previous veggie garden has made a big difference.  So I put together a short 1 minute video to show what the trees look like and how to pick the fruits, since many people have no idea where papayas come from.It takes about a year to year and a half from planting to picking.  To really be on top of things you'd be starting more seeds every year or two to replace the old trees as they get too tall and awkward to pick... a fruit picker pole can only reach so far.  I try to remember this fact but of course when you have buckets of papayas it's easy to forget! So now we enjoy the fresh fruit every day with our breakfast, and have ...
