A new year is upon us once again. All bright and shiny, and full of promise. Its a time to catch your breath, look at where you are, and see where it is you want to go. I love the anticipation that comes with a new year! I need to get some painters in the house very soon to finish up a home improvement job that is in its 12th week. There is a daughter's wedding in less than two weeks coming up and lots of family will be here. A busy start to the year! There are 2 closings scheduled for January already and I have quite a few clients getting ready to buy and/or sell. The new year looks like it is starting with much promise! Are you ready to conquer a new year? What will it take to make 2015 a wonderful year? The book, Raving Fans, talks about improving yourself just 1% per week, and in a ...

The end of week 11 of the home improvement saga brought more  workers and the near completion of this huge project. As you can see to the right, the staircase guys came in and worked all day putting the finishing touches on the staircase. All it needs now is some touch up paint that will be done after the holidays. I was in the house most of the time these guys were working and I never heard anything out of them. I came upstairs from my office and they were finishing up. What a difference these part of the renovation made with new stair treads, sanded, stained, and finished, along with new wrought iron balusters to replace the original white wood ones. The very next day the carpet guys came in. They arrived about noon and finally finished up around 9pm. It was a long day for them, but t...

Well, my buddies were back again this morning. They are my constant companions during the morning hours. Not every day, but several times per week, 2-3 deer will come by in the morning to say hello. Sometimes they are just passing through. I think they are checking to see if that weird creature behind those windows (me) is still there. Other times, like today, they will sit and watch me for a while. I don't think I am all that interesting to watch, but I love seeing them. There were two that came by today. Sometimes they are joined by a buck sporting antlers. Even when I am busy, I will stop and watch these magnificent creatures. They always seem so at peace. The Eagle Watch neighborhood in Woodstock Georgia where I live, backs up to Corp of Engineer property. My guess is that these de...

Dave the floor guy showed up today with the bottom step! It is sold as a kit and the manufacturer had us on hold for a few days. Dave replaced the bottom step and stained it today. He also put the 2nd top coat on the other stairs. Tomorrow he will come in and put the finish coat on the kitchen, Dining room floors and the steps. The bottom step will be done by Monday. Yay! Since the kitchen and dining room floors and most of the stairs will be off limits Saturday, my wife and I are headed out to a nice hotel for Saturday night. We will let Dave do his floor work without us around. No heavy lacquer smell, clean sheets, and a clean bathroom. Probably should have done that 10 weeks ago.

Yes, we are half way through week 10 of the home renovation and still going! As you can see in the picture at right, the stair treads and landing are taking shape. We should have all treads in and the first step which is a piece all by itself, and we may have it all sanded and stained by this afternoon. Just a note, all this raises a ton of dust. Even though they hung plastic to keep it down, I am vacuuming the kitchen floor and wiping the counter tops everyday to keep the dust levels down. Just look at the mess on our dining room floor. 0We are trying to keep doors closed but the fine dust goes everywhere! The next three days will be where the finish is applied, with the last day seeing the kitchen and dining room floors receiving their last top coats as well. Then on to the rails and ...

Yes, this is week 10 of the home improvement saga. Not much happened in week 9. The kitchen is now complete and we are filling up the new cabinets with all the kitchen stuff that was stored in the guest bedroom all this time. We have started moving everything that is on the carpeted floors to other areas so that we can re-carpet. This means a complete bedroom set, fish tank, piano, sofa, etc. The staircase is set to be demolished today. We started a week ago, but I stopped it because I did not like they way it was looking. We replaced 3 steps and started refinishing the rest, but the guys who built the staircase must have worked on Habitat homes...there were about a thousand nails in each step! So, we are replacing every step and part of the hand rail system. This should be complete by ...
