My name is Cheryl Kieler and I live in Winder, Georgia. I have an amazing husband and 5 awesome children. We also have 8 rescue dogs, goats and chickens. We moved to Georgia about 2 years ago from South Florida. Since then I decided to get my real estate license and when my son, who is a Fire medic, used Homes for Heroes to purchase his first home, I knew I wanted to get involved. I have a strong desire to help, wherever and whenever I can. I may be newer to the Real Estate world, but I have over 20 years of experience in the business world. My husband and I ran a very successful business in South Florida for many years and I have a lot of experience that will contribute to my new venture.  I so look forward to helping as many heroes as I possibly can and I am proud to be a part of such...

Selling a home for a home owner is an exciting and sometimes stressful scenario. The first and most important thing you want to do in preparing your house for market is to make sure it has good curb appeal.  Curb appeal is simply the first impression a prospective buyer gets when driving by the house. It has been said that up to 80% of the decision to buy a house is made before even entering the home. No matter how great your house looks inside with the best floor plan, the greatest design decor and updated finishings....if your house is unimaginative or overgrown and unsightly outside, a lot of potential drive by buyers will instantly judge the book by its cover and pass on to the next one. So start on the outside of the house by all means.  A lot of creating curb appeal is common sens...

After a really long, hot summer, we have been rewarded with an unusually long fall.  Some years it seems that we go straight from summer into winter with just a few days of real fall, but this year it cooled off right after Labor Day and we have had a long stretch of cool, mostly dry weather.  The trees in my neighborhood, Hickory Hill, have popped with color in the last few days.  It reminds me of the song, "Let's go out in a blaze of glory".

Recently, a couple of our Hickory Hill Subdivision neighbors invited us over for a "honey extracting party".  They keep bees in their backyards and also take their hives to the north Georgia mountains for a time each summer for the sour wood honey.  They called us over a couple of weeks ago to witness (and help with) the honey extracting.  It was an interesting process and a lot of fun (until you got to the 100th frame).  There are quite a few backyard bee keepers here in Oconee County, GA.     After removing the frames from the hives, the first step is to slice open the honey comb.       Then the frames are placed into the extractor which spins and causes the honey to flow out of the comb and into the bottom of the extractor.       This is honeycomb from where the comb is sliced ope...

What happenned in 2010? 2010 was a challenging year for real estate across the country. While Watkinsville Ga did not escape those challenges the presence of the University of Georgia in neighboring Athens and an unemployment rate that remained well below both the state (often the lowest in the state) and national averages kept the real estate market a little bit more stable than in many areas of the country as well as Georgia. The numbers: Chart 1, below, shows how the 2010 residential real estate market faired against the 2009 market as far as total sales and Days on Market. In 2009, there were 169 residental units sold. In 2010 that number increased by almost 9% to 184 units. During the same period the percentage of sales that were foreclosures also increased in 2010 over 2009. In 20...

This is some of the produce from our garden.  This year we tried some asparagus beans, shown above.  They are climbers, and produce long, thin beans that taste, oddly, somewhat like asparagus!  So far I've steamed them with a little garlic & ginger.  They are also supposed to be good in stir-fry. Does anyone have any experience with these or any ways to cook them?

There 's a whole lot goin' on in Watkinsville over the 4th of July weekend! If you're in town on Friday, you'll want to start out by going to lunch at Miss Gail's as it is Fish Friday with fried fish and all the trimmings.  (Do keep in mind that she'll be closed on Saturday and Monday because of the holiday). Then in the evening be sure and come to First Friday downtown from 6:00-9:00.  The downtown shops will be open and lots of activities for the kids - train rides, booths and a lot more. Saturday morning at 9:00 is the "Strolls at Harris Shoals Park" hosted by artists Bob Clements and Bill Pierson.  They will stop at various locations throughout the park and help you sketch what you see.  The cost for adults is a $5.00 donation.     Then head on over to the Eagle Tavern on Main St...

Last evening we attended the Rose of Athens Theatre production of "Much Ado About Nothing" on the lawn at Ashford Manor in Watkinsville, Ga.  It was a warm and muggy evening on the beautiful lawn but the play was funny and delightful while the cast of local thespians did a great job of making Shakespeare come alive. There are 3 more performances this week, tonight and tomorrow (June 18, 19 & 20) at 8:00 p.m., so if you have a chance to go, don't miss it!  Ashford Manor is located at #5 Harden Hill Rd. in Watkinsville.  For more information, go to www.roseofathens.org.

OK, I couldn't resist blogging about a news item in the May 20 edition of the Oconee Enterprise, one of Watkinsville's weeklies.  It seems that the main courtroom has been bugged - not with electronic listening devices but with - yes - CHIGGERS!  Judge Lawton Stephens was complaining about being bitten while judging, so the courtroom had to be fumigated to get rid of the chiggers!  The court was back in business the next day. Anyone not familiar with chiggers:  they are tiny red bugs which embed themselves in a person's skin, making for a very itchy welt.  Picking blackberries, walking through fields and woods and sitting on old logs are common ways to acquire chiggers, but this is the first time I've heard of them attacking people in a courtroom

When my family and I re-located to Athens in 2004 it was such a welcome adventure!  After spending entirely way too many years in the cold tundra that is Michigan, we finally decided to take my husband's mother's advice and head South.  He's a GA boy, born and bred and his mother is retired on Lake Oconee.  My husband and I own Pet Supplies "Plus" franchises http://www.petsuppliesplus.comand after visiting Athens one beautiful (yes over 60 degrees) winter day we decided that Athens was the perfect spot for our new business venture.  I love everything about GA.  I love the short winters!  I love the almost year round sunshine!  I love sitting on a Broad St. patio eating lunch on campus! Heck, I'll even love the pollen if it comes with the sunshine.  But (and I say this lovingly) it can b...
