On  the north end of Jekyll Island, Georgia, you will find one of only two remaining Georgia pre-revolutionary structures made of tabby.  Originally the house was the residence of Major William Horton, one of General James Oglethorpe's most trusted military aides. Major Horton was the first English resident of Jekyll Island.  His two story home was built on the north end of Jekyll Island along with a barn.  The residents of neighboring Saint Simons Island depended on crops in his fields.  Major Horton cut a road across the north end of Jekyll from his home to the beach which is to this day named Horton Road.  A Georgia historical marker, on the subject of "Tabby," is positioned at the Horton House site explaining the building material used in the original homes.  Used in Georgia during... 03/14/2009

CNN Visits The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Georgia. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center designed for sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education on sea turtles opened in June 2007 on Jekyll Island, Georgia.      The Center is very much like an emergency room and rehabilitation center for injured and sick turtles in addition to scientific research. You get to see the various patients that are in rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Center and find out about their injuries and illnesses.  Freshwater turtles (like you find in ponds or in pet stores) have flat feet and webbed toes for swimming while a sea turtle's feet are flippers used for swimming.  A freshwater turtle can move its neck into an S shape to put its head inside its shell while a sea turtle cannot. Today was another day to take a quick after work mini vacation on Jekyll Island....we started with a quick walk on the beach. Next a quick bike ride....this is the view where we unload the bikes to start on the nature trail..... A quick stop to shoot a photo of the driftwood on Driftwood Beach.... A couple of rabbits were munching on grass while we biked past...... This little rascal was caught.....trying to get in the trash cans. A small white tailed doe.....was spotted in the marsh grass near the bike path.... Apparently, we were in the doe's way....since she came on out towards the path.  Maybe it is a Doe Path.....not a bike path....you'll have to ask the doe..... The doe saying good bye......as we continued on.... Our final view....before we loaded the bikes back up and headed home... 02/21/2009

Jekyll Island is one of the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia referred to as one of "The Golden Isles of Georgia".  Jekyll Island is 7 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide offering 4,400 acres of upland and 8 miles of beaches as well as 20 miles of hiking trails.    Jekyll Island is a great place for birdwatchers as it is known as a resting place for migrating birds.       For more information on Jekyll Island and the surrounding area, visit The Golden Isles Blog or call Chapman Realty for a newcomer's guide. For 15 years, SeaJays Waterfront Cafe and Pub has been available for casual waterfront dining at the Jekyll Island Marina.  Eating on the outside decks enjoying the waterviews at the marina makes this an memorable experience. One of my husband's favorite is the low country boil buffet available in the evening.  SeaJays is opens daily at 11:00 a.m. and serves lunch and dinner.  Located just north of the Tideland's Nature Center overlooking the Jekyll Island Marina, SeaJays offers good food and great memories. Today was the last day for the Holiday Island Tour on Jekyll Island here in Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia.  And the last Holiday Island tour was today at 3:00 - I managed to arrive for the 1:00 tour - this is well within a deadline for me.  View from Jekyll to the Sidney Lanier Bridge from Historic District It will take many posts to share everything I saw today but I wanted to start with Mistletoe Cottage which was so festively decorated.  Please note that the State of Georgia will not let you photograph the inside of this beautifully restored home.  Mistletoe Cottage is also known as the Claflin/Porter Cottage.  Originally constructed in 1900 for Henry  Porter, a manufacturer of locomotives and a graduate of Brown University.  Porter was very active in many charitable orga... 12/31/2008
