Blairsville GA's Blood Mountain Shelter   The summit of Blood Mountain with an elevation of 4,458 feet is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachain Trail and the sixth-tallest mountain in Georgia. On the top of Blood Mountain, there is a two-room shelter that was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Blood Mountain Shelter is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is still used by hikers today. This is an exciting accomplishment and another WIN for the Blairsville-Union County Appalachian Trail Community.

Helton Creek Falls in Blairsville GAis one of the best kept secrets Helton Creek Falls in Blairsville GA is one of the best kept secrets . It also happens to be one of the easiest Falls to get down to and the lower and upper falls are just amazing! If you’ve been to Vogel State Park its just a little ways down the road from it off  Helton Creek Road. From the small parking lot you’ll see the trailhead marked by a simple sign and arrow. This trail descends quickly, but not too steep, to a mountain laurel cove fed by Helton Creek rich with moisture-loving plant life. Many of the improvements in this area date back to the work done by the Civilian Conservation Corps. As the path climbs you’ll come across a boardwalk over fragile riverine zones. Stairs on the left descend to the bottom of th...

Dyers stated, "The 10 pm tornado cut all power and road access to victims; our only means of rescue was from lakeside. I am not that familiar with Lake Burton, so the signs were crucial...
