(This big guy was beginning to yawn). I recently visited Big Cat Rescue at 12802 Easy Street in Tampa, Florida.  What a great visit!  The tour was guided by an extremely knowledgeable volunteer.  These cats are gorgeous.  And BCR's own Scott Lope was just named Animal Planet's HERO OF THE YEAR.  That's big, folks.  Congratulations to Scott! There were so many cats - white tigers, ligers, ocelots, and lions who really roared.  It would be so educational to take your children on one of these tours.  They could learn about the difference between sanctuaries and zoos and the exotic animal crisis in our world. Census Bureau data shows that the median size of a new single-family home in the United States shrank to 2,215 square feet in 2008 from 2,277 square feet the year before.The change represents the first decrease in median size in almost 14 years, as single-family housing had been growing larger on a consistent basis since 1991.Many people are opting for smaller homes as many are being more conservative in their spending, being somewhat influenced probably by the stock market, retirement concerns, etc.Part of the reason for this shift is also because the sales market is being driven largely by first-time homebuyers, who lean toward townhouses and other smaller properties. In Hillsborough County, Florida, we are allowed to combine our paper, plastic and glass in one container for recycling pickup. I always wondered who (or what) does the separating of these items. I was getting sick and tired of vaccuming and dusting every day.  We have two Beagles and, man oh man, do we have a dog hair problem.  I didn't know how bad the problem was until we replaced all of our carpeted areas with hardwood floors.  The flooring is just beautiful but when the A/C kicks on, it's like a scene from an old Western movie with tumbleweeds rolling by. I was in Petsmart buying dog food when I spotted it.  The Furminator.  Reduces shedding by 90%  Ha!  Yet another ploy to wrangle my money from my purse.  But I believe in doing my part for this lousy economy, so I bought it. I tried the Furminator on Cooper and....nothing.  His hair is short and apparently his undercoat isn't "all that." But I got hold of Baxter and did the fur ever fly!  He loved being "Furminated" and I... 12/28/2008

 Recently it's been taking longer and longer to dry a load of clothes in my electric dryer - which means I was spending more $$ for electricity than I needed or wanted to.   So I called a dryer vent cleaning service and, WOW, what a difference!  I used a service called DeLintz but there are lots of people out there who can clean your dryer vent.  I was charged $80 and was told that the vent was FILLED with lint.  Not only was my stuffed vent costing me energy dollars, it was also a major fire hazard.  I was informed that the dryer vent should be cleaned once a year for maximum efficiency.  I'm a believer!   Peggy Edwards, REALTOR, GREEN DESIGNATIONColdwell BankerTampa, FL(813) 787-2923www.PeggyEdwards.com   12/09/2008

Here are four simple questions a professional lender absolutely must know the answers to.  If they do not know the answers, run-don't walk-to a lender who does.   What are mortgage interest rates based on?   The only correct answer is "Mortgage Backed Securities" or "Mortgage Bonds," not the 10-year Treasury Note.  While the 10-year T-Note sometimes "trends" in the same direction as Mortgage Bonds, it is not unusual to see them move in opposite directions.  Do not work with a lender who has their eyes on the wrong indicators.   What is the next economic report or event that could cause interest-rate movement?
