We had the pleasure of dining at one of Valparaiso Florida's best restaurants - TradeWinds.  The photo above tells more than words can convey.  Most people don't know about this restaurant by just driving by. It's obscure and unflamboyant on the outside. But the food is incredible. It's usually crowded, so you need reservations. I had a splendid time there on Saturday. What other great restaurants are in Niceville, Florida? Compass Rose at 303 Glen Ave., Valparaiso, has great ambiance and good food.  The bar area has modern, sort of edgy lighting with large booths that I prefer over the main dining room. The Boathouse Landing restaurant in Valparaiso, Florida is good.  I mean "YUM" good!  My husband and I went there for dinner last night.  We met his co-workers for cocktails on the porch in the Bilge Pub, overlooking Boggy Bayou.  Afterwards, we dined upstairs and the food was excellent. We started with the crab and shrimp dip while reviewing the tantalizing Boathouse Landing menu.  They make their own tortilla chips to go with the dip, and really need to package and sell them!  This isn't the "in the bag" store stuff.  Hush puppies were an automatic appetizer, and they weren't "mush" puppies, but crunchy delights with strawberry butter. Evidence shows that perhaps up to 10,000 years ago Native Americans were living in the area now occupied by the City of Niceville. A number of projectile points have been found and burial mounds dot the area offering mute proof of times long past. Conflict arose between these native populations and the European explorers who began arriving in the area around 1500-1700. This was a time of proud Native Americans, conquering Spanish conquistadors, and thieving pirates. By the early 1800s the new American government had settled in, and established its own systems of politics, religion, and trade, much the same way the Native Americans had done centuries earlier.
