Safety Harbor Florida has some beautiful old live oak trees and those that reside in Philippe Park on Tampa Bay are certainly no exception. While taking a long walk though the park recently, I took time to get a few photos of these magnificent trees. If only they could transmit all that they have witnessed through their long lives, think of the history we could learn! White people have only lived in this area since the Spaniards came. Before that, this area was an important settlement for Native Americans. Philippe Park's mound was an important lookout point over Tampa Bay. Ah, the history these trees could share................... This is why we do the stingray shuffle here in Florida when we go into the water (see photo).  Stingrays come into the shallow water to feed and bury themselves into the sand. If you step on one, they have a barb under their tail that they use for defense. That means a lot of pain and it is best to take a trip to the hospital to have it looked at. Quite often the barb breaks off in the wound and has to be surgically removed. Even if you are lucky and the barb doesn't break, the venom causes pain, swelling and often muscle cramping. It is always best to seek medical advice and have the wound looked at by a professional. I grew up in Florida and, other than my 17 years in Europe, have always lived here. I have never been injured by a stingray. When I am in the water, I do the stingray shu...

Safety Harbor Florida's Count Odet Philippe was the first non-Native American to call Safety Harbor his home. That home is today's Philippi Park. A native of Lyon France, Count Odet Philippe served as chief surgeon for Napoleon before leaving Europe and moving to the Caribbean. Philippe was in Haiti and some of the other islands before settling in Safety Harbor. His estate was on the land of the present day Philippe Park. The land was high due to the numerous mounds left by the Tocobaga Tribe that had lived in the area. As a matter of fact, it was the highest mound that saved Philippe and his family when the great hurricane of 1848 caused a tidal wave in Tampa Bay that destroyed his family home.  Philippi rebuilt his home and the citrus industry that he had started in the area. The grap...

Safety Harbor Florida's Philippe Park has wonderful trails for hiking. The trails meander through the live oak trees and along Old Tampa Bay. With over 160 acres, this grand park is registered on the National Register of Historic Landmarks due to the mounds that were built by the Native American tribe of the Tocobaga that lived in the area prior to the white man arriving.  Much of what was found during escavations can be viewed in the Safety Harbor Museum in downtown Safety Harbor. Today the park is a favorite location for hiking, jogging, picnics, kids birthday parties and as a boat launching site. Kayaks have easy access to Old Tampa Bay from the park as well and many of the local fishermen enjoy fishing from the shoreline here in Safety Harbor's beautiful Philippe Park. We are indeed...

Philippe Park in beautiful Safety Harbor Florida was our destination this morning for a nice long walk along the waters of Tampa Bay. Naturally, Ronnie wanted to check out the boat ramp area there and while he was doing that, I had to take a photo of this sign indicating that it is unlawful to feed or molest the alligators. When people feed alligators, they associate humans with food and thusly are no longer afraid of us. That is definitely not a positive thing! Stay tuned for more on beautiful Philippe Park in Safety Harbor Florida!

New construction homes in Safety Harbor have been at a bit of a stand still since 2007, but the Safety Harbor real estate market is picking up as of late, and so is residential building. New home builders like Bay to Bay Properties, Digiovani Homes, and Saxony Homes are all back on board for building new homes in Safety Harbor this year! This is very exciting for the city of Safety Harbor as this is another sign that the local housing market is starting to shape up! Saxony Homes and Bay to Bay Properties have had every single one of their homes under contract before construction has even been completed. Aside from the fact that both of these builders have a quality product, this tells us that new homes are in high demand in Safety Harbor. Digiovani has a new construction townhome develo...

Splishing and  Splashing at Phillipe Park in Safety Harbor Florida A couple of weeks back we were at Phillipe Park in Safety Harbor (a really great park to take the family - it even has an Indian Mound), and these guys were in the water waiting anxiously for a stick to be thrown their way. Phillipe Park - the steps to the Indian Mound: there is a path on the other side of the mound for easier access. For an explanation of Indian Mounds check out site. And, when you get to the top, this is the view along with dogs splishing and splashing. Not a bad way to spend a day. See a previous Phillipe Park post. Safety Harbor Florida Market Report - March 2012 The market has certainly picked up and we are seeing it everywhere! Safety Harbor, that adorable little community directly on Tampa Bay, is no exception. When we look at the price trend chart for single family homes above, we see something that is NOT typical for the area...........a slight DECLINE in sold prices during the last couple of months! Currently, there are 84 single family homes on the market in Safety Harbor Florida. They range from a high of $3,999,000 for a large (over 7000 sq ft) waterfront home to a low of $50,662 for a much smaller short sale. Turning to townhomes, condos and villas on our price trend chart, we see once again that there are still some deals to be had. As far as what is currently on the market in that cate...

The average price was $270,000 and the average number of days on the market was 48. The average sold price per sqare foot was only $117.49!!! We are seeing shorter time on the market throughout the state! As the inventory decreases, people are snapping up the properties that are available. As for the townhome, condo and villa market in Safety Harbor Florida during February 2012, there were 5 closings with an average sale price of $82,900. As for the ...

Safety Harbor Florida's Funky Art is indeed something worth sharing. While I was in Safety Harbor yesterday for lunch, my girlfriend Natalie and I took a drive through a particular neighborhood that we both know and love. Natalie is an art teacher and I am a former potter, so we both enjoy funky art. These homes have evolved during the years and the homeowners have been adding more and more unusual pieces of funky art to decorate their homes, garages and yards. The really wonderful thing is that more and more homes in this neighborhood are constantly getting involved in the funky art! Naturally, I had my trusty Nikon along and had to take a few shots to share right here! We were on our way to visit the site where we had both taught school for so many years in Drop Out Prevention......th...

Whistle Stop Grill - Safety Harbor Florida - Best Vegan Lunch Around Today I met my girlfriend, Natalie Keyes, for lunch. Natalie and I go back a long way.....we used to have classrooms right next door to each other back when I was teaching. It is always wonderful, getting together and sharing what is going on. We are both busy and don't do this as much as we would like, but that is life. So today we decided to go to the Whistle Stop Grill on Main Street in Safety Harbor Florida for lunch. We used to go there years ago, when we taught just down the road in Safety Harbor, so it was especially nice, returning there. The restaurant has changed ownership and the menu has changed....for the better! Unfortunately, I did not take a photo of my meal, which was wonderful! I had hummus on a bed o...
