As with my other blog Harbour Village - The Only Place To Play Golf In Ponce Inlet , Harbour Village is also the only condo complex with Marina in Ponce Inlet, Florida. Sounds strange as Ponce Inlet is "squeezed" between the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River. Obviously, the ocean is not a good place for a Marina, so all the condos dotting the shoreline do not have the slips. Intracoastal (Halifax River) is a different story. That exactly the place to have the marinas. So, how come not every riverfront condo in Ponce Inlet has a Marina? That's not true, every condo on the Halifax River has a marina...but there is one and only condo complex with a marina - Harbour Village. Because Harbour Village is the only condo complex on the Intracoastal in Ponce Inlet. The title may surprise you as Florida is famous for its golf courses, and you would expect the abundance of them, but still its true: Habour Village is the only place to play golf in Ponce Inlet. And if you think about it, it is really not a surprise. Ponce Inlet is a small, just over 3,000 residents town on the southern tip of the barrier island, and land is scarce on the barrier island. It is too narrow for a full fledged golf course, and by the time developers put their eye on the larger scale developments, there was not much of suitable land left. Ponce Inlet, a quiet jewel of Greater Daytona Beach area, is a small town of just over 3 thousand residents on the southernmost tip of the barrier island. If you think there is no such thing as a quiet place in Daytona Beach area, think Ponce Inlet. The town is past the last bridge to the mainland, so you just can't drive through on your way to Miami. It is basically a dead end town with two two-lane streets ending in 52-acre pet frinedly Lighthouse Point Park, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Ponce DeLeon Inlet, and the Halifax River (the Intracoastal). Summer came with noticeable heat and the temperatures quickly climbed to the near record high with heat index hitting 107F. Channel 13 is showing a map of Florida all in red with only a thin orange line along the Atlantic Ocean. Red is over 100F. Orange is over 90F. This is only along the waters of Atlantic. And that's where I am. I live in Ponce Inlet, in a condo across the street from the Ocean. I got up too late to go to the beach in the morning, the sun was already unforgiving, and I had what to do in the cool comfort of my condo. Today was the last day for me to visit the Niña and the Pinta, two replicas of the 15th-century vessels used by Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage to the Americas, as it was their last day of being docked at Ponce Inlet as part of a national tour for the two floating museums. I did not expect that many people in my wildest dreams. We had to park at Waverly Plaza and take a shuttle to the dock, as there was not parking available.Today was the 10th and the last day of their stay in Ponce Inlet, and tomorrow these two caravels will sail to St. Augustine for a 12-day stay there as part of their tour across the US.   Sea turtles' nesting season is officially on as of May 1 and will be until October 31. This means protection to the 5 species of sea turtles coming to lay eggs on the East and West coast of Florida. With the development of beachside, protecting turtles becomes a serious task. First and foremost it is about light. Or, better say, no light cast on the beach after 9 PM. If you can see your shadow, it is already too much light. Even the light from the cell phone is a problem. All light close to the beach are shaded and oriented away from the beach. The light disorients not only the hatchlings, but the mother-turtles as well. With the beginning of warm season, and temperature going to 84F, it was already hot in the park. I bravely left the flippers in the car, and was surprised how unbearable the wooden boards of the raised walkways really were. I had to "dance" to retreat to a cooler sand. My wife did  not like the heat, did  not feel well and wanted to go home and then go back to "our Beach" later when sun is not that aggressive. And that's exactly what we did when the sun set at the horizon. Our circular garage is 7 story high, and when we saw people standing their, we remembered that there was a shuttle launched scheduled for today, We were not watching the time, and did not plan to go outside and watched it, so we di not pay that much attention. I took this Sunday off. There were not prearranged activities, so I could do what I love most: walking the beach. The weather was absolutely beautiful, blue skies and sunshine. We either cross the street and go to "our beach" right here, or we take a car and 1.5 miles south go to the Park. We haven't been in the park for a couple of months, so we decided to pay a visit there. Surprisingly, there was a line of cars waiting to get to the park. Looks like summer is here. we waited a few minutes, and here we were, right in the park. With so many cars parked along the road, we had to park far and then walk to the tip of the peninsula. First time we came to Ponce Inlet - a quaint small town surrounded by water of 3 sides - when we first time came to Florida in 1995. The market was terrible, the signs for sale were on every third home and we got the impression that people were simply trying to run away. We could not figure how, but figured that if people were leaving, we better keep away. How darn wrong we were! Even in hte market as dramatically low as now those prices are long gone. It took us nearly a decade to return to Ponce Inlet, this time to a condo in The Links. It is pretty nerve-wreaking for a parent to get a call where a male voice on the other end asks to speak to your eight-year-old son. That's the call I got a few days ago.  I remember going though all the possible internet things he could have accidentally signed up for, thinking the worst...  The man calmly assures me that the news he has to share with my son is, indeed, of the good kind, great even - he, my son,  is a proud parent of baby turtles.... Remember my July post about the Lady Turtle laying eggs on Ponce Inlet Beach in July caught on photo camera by my grandson?  My grandson called Turtle Patrol, a volunteer organization watching turtle nests, and "adopted" this nest. His little brother Shane and their mom adopted 2 more nests on our quiet Ponce Inlet beach. Now, 70 days later, they received a call from the Turtle Patrol, that they were going to open the nest as the turtles already hatched. They invited us to come and watch. We gathered on the beach at 6:30. Bob Shaw, a volunteer from the Turtle Patrol, told us about the loggerhead sea turtels, and explained that they patrol the beach and check every nest early in the morning. Sunday is the day when I try to make it to the beach. Shouldn't be that difficult as I live across the street from the beach and every morning I rush to the glass sliding balcony door to catch a glimpse of the Atlantic.
