The show will be held at the Partner's Club which is located behind Oak Hill Hospital, 11375 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL.       Saturday will consist of judging the plants that the club members show. This is an official AVSA (African Violet Society of America) judged show so the judges come from other AVSA affiliates.  We take this seriously and spend lots of time getting our plants ready. Judging is rigorous. I’ve seen grown people cry when they d...

Hernando County Florida Home Sales for December 2013 provided by Silvia Dukes, REALTOR, Tropic Shores Realty, Spring Hill, Florida Hernando County homes sales slowed in December with 19 fewer homes sold than in November; however, this is not an unexpected event during the holiday season. Compared to November, average sales price declined by about 6% and median sales price remained stable.  Homes under contract declined by about 8%.   After several months of slowly increasing inventory, the number of homes presently for sale decreased compared to the same time last month.  However, with the holidays over, this should change again as more homeowners will list their homes in the weeks and months ahead. The number of distressed homes such as short sales and foreclosures in Hernando County i...

Beware the Brazilian PepperTree - Pretty, Invasive, Toxic Introduced to Florida around 1890 as an ornamental shrub, the Brazilian Pepper plant is now widespread throughout Florida.  It's an evergreen and with it's glossy leaves, it is quite a pretty plant especially around the holidays when it puts on clusters of red berries.  Because of that, it is often - and falsely - called "Florida Holly".     As mentioned, Brazilian Pepper has become widespread in the frostfree areas of Florida and is now considered an invasive species that will crowd out other, native plants.   So much so, that Brazilian Pepper is legally prohibited from sale, transport, or propagation in Florida and in fact, categorized as a Category 1 pest by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council.   Birds will eat the seeds and...

Brooksville Art Gallery Features Paintings by Paul O. Shaskan The City of Brooksville Art Gallery is currently featuring local painter Paul O. Shaskan with a retrospective exhibit of his works of art!  Paul O. Shaskan decribes himself as a self taught artist with a passion for bold and bright colors.      I met Paul the first time in 2005 when I joined the Spring Hill Art League, where he is a very active member.  I have always been very fond of his paintings, the subject matter he chooses and his style of painting.  And although I have seen many of his paintings in previous art shows before, I did not know the true extent of his work until I saw this remarkable collection at the City of Brooksville Art Gallery. The works of Paul Shaskan will be on display until January 2, 2014 for the ...

Fall Treat from the Kitchen - Sweet and Sour Pumpkin After Halloween, I decided I needed to do something with that pumpkin before it went bad.  When I was a child, my mother always canned pumpkin similar to pickles but with a nice sweet and sour flavor.  I knew I had that recipe somewhere and decided to make some.  It turned out quite good, I gave away a few jars and we had some with our Sunday roast.  By the way, I roasted the pumpkin seeds  for another tasty treet to snack on. Sweet and Sour Pumpkin Ingredients:  3-4 lbs Pumpkin (Butternut squash will work as well)  -  peeled, cleaned and cut in bite size pieces 4 cups vinegar and 6 cups water  - depending on how much pumpkin you have, you can increase or decrease the liquid as long as you maintain a 2:3 ratio 1 to 1/2 lbs sugar cinna...

Historic Sites in Hernando County, Florida - Chinsegut Hill Manor House Chinsegut Hill Manor House in Brooksville, Florida is another one of the beautiful historic sites in Hernando County and truly a treasure of our area.  Listed on the National Historic Register in 2013, this historic structure is situated atop of a hill overlooking hundreds of acres of public and private lands.      The site was first settled in 1845, then sold in 1851 at which time the new owners began construction of the manor house.  At that time, the property was called Mount Airy, then renamed Snow Hill in 1873 until 1905 when yet another new owner gave the site its present name, Chinsegut Hill.     In 1932, over 2000 acres of land were donated to the United States Department of Agriculture for research and cons...

Historic Sites in Hernando County Florida - Spring Lake Community Center Visitors driving along Spring Lake Highway in Brooksville, Florida, are often curious about the old stone building that stands in the center of the small Spring Lake community. Built during the Great Depression in 1938 as a Work Progress Administration (WPA) project, the building was intended to be a polling place and community center as well as a cafeteria for the nearby Spring Lake School which is no longer standing.  The building materials came from all local sources: a nearby rock quarry, lumber from the Withlacoochee State Forest and the labor of the Spring Lake population.         No longer in use as a school cafeteria, the building still serves as a community center for the Spring Lake community today.  Whet...

Hernando County Florida Home Sales | Home Sales for October 2013 provided by Silvia Dukes, REALTOR, Tropic Shores Realty, Spring Hill, Florida   October 2013 turned out to be a good month for home sales in Hernando County.   Compared to September, home sales increased, average and median sales prices increased and average days on market decreased.  Inventory is on the increase after a summer with low inventory.  This is good news for buyers who are finally getting more choices in homes for sale in Hernando County.   Traditionally, the Fall and Winter months are very active months for Hernando County home sales as the influx of "snowbirds" escaping the cold winter months up north is making a positive impact on the Hernando County real estate market.      Homes Currently on Market*:  1435...
