Manatees are mammals, and look like a walrus without the tusk. There are approximately 5,000 in Florida waters, with censuses usually being taken in the winter when these gentle giants are easier to count in the shallower water. Being vegetarians, manatees eat up to 15% of their weight daily, and can reach lengths of 10 feet or more with weights of 1,200 pounds.  Babies are three feet long, and about 70 pounds at birth.
