Well known as one of the largest on the East Coast this years Oktoberfest held by the Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association did not disappoint!  There were over 20,000 people this year having a great time with German music, dress, dance and traditional German food and beer. Sept. 17-21-The event has been held by the Delaware Saengerbund since 1979.  The group was founded in 1853 as a German-American singing society.  The proceeds of the event support the Saengerbund Library among other charitable organizations connected with the German-American community. The event is held in the third week of September because the weather is much nicer than October. The fourth Annual Newark Film Festival is bigger than ever with 30 feature films and 112 Screenings! Some of the films were filmed in Delaware or have actors or directors who live here.  One connection is the director of American Teen directed by a University of Delaware grad and it stars a former American Idol contestant (he plays the dorky guy) There is also a film about the Life of Hunter S. Thompson a author who wrote Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.   One of the strangest movies I have ever seen. Newark Delaware Mayor Vance Funk told The News Journal this week that the University of Delaware has placed a bid on the soon to be closed Chrysler Plant. The Chrysler plant is located on 244 acres just across the street from the U of D Sports complex and the closing will mean the loss of 1,100 good paying jobs.  The City of Newark currently collect $360,000 in taxes from the plant (so much for unfair tax breaks for big business)  Rumor has it the University would use the land to grow its enrollment and build a new football stadium. There was at least one more bidder according to reports, Pettinaro Enterprises who is a major player in the development of the Wilmington Riverfront. I can not see the University not coming out on top of this purchase, it really is a one of a kind property. ... 08/17/2008

University of Delaware Head Coach K.C. Keeler and Delaware State University Al Lavan participated in a cook off for charity Monday in Dover. The event will raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic IMPACT Delaware Tobacco Prevention Coalition. It was a great time for all as the event was held in front of a crowd of students and players.  Keeler (UofD) cooked Blue Hen Chicken and Lavan (DSU) made a tasty beef chili. The City of Newark Delaware held its 5th Annual Food and Brew Fest in downtown Newark on July 26th. The one day event offered brew tasting, prize drawings and food specials in honor of American Beer Month.  The brewers and chefs also gave mini-seminars on what food goes best with different types of beer. Coochs Bridge (Cooches Bridge) located in Newark Delaware near Rt. 896 and I-95 was the site of the only revolutionary battle fought in the state of Delaware. The battle started August 30th a couple of miles South of the bridge and ended up there with the American troops running low on ammo while fighting the British and Hessian troops on September 3, 1777.  The battle gave General Washington time to escape from Philadelphia.  30 Americans died and a unknown number of British and Hessian troops were killed.It is thought to be the first time the Stars and Stripes were carried.   03/20/2008
