After years of wondering what was hidden behind the civil war cannons south of Newark, Delaware, I finally got a spot on a tour of the Cooch's Bridge Historic Site.  The homestead and 10 acres were donated to  the State Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs a few years ago by the Cooch family. The 1769 house has been owned by the family since it was built, and being Delaware, I have been acquainted with a couple of them for years.  It was the site of the Sept. 1777 Revolutionary War battle (details here). A visit to the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens the other day turned out to be a colorful trip. The Trial Garden showed what could be done given the restrictions imposed by the gardeners. The plants are watered and fertilized for a week or two after planting, but that's it. Also on display are winners of the All-American Selections award given nationally. The Newark Delaware Garden Tour 2020 was a benefit for the Newark Arts Alliance. We had a chance to drive around Newark and take a sprint 8 miles out to Elkton, Maryland for a walk on the wild side . On a large property, the Elkton garden was "designed for repose and solitude." I started the tour by meeting my friend Brenda in her garden in Newark, which had the most spectacular plant of the day, a large coral colored Clivia. One of the themes we saw was "little people" and fairy cottages. An artist named Dragonfly had her decorated car on display at the end of her driveway.  Gardeners ranged from the tightly controlled ensemble complete with classical music playing, to one with several meadow areas (meaning grasses growing uncontrolled).
