Historic New Castle Day last Saturday went well, lots of activities, Colonial troops in uniform, people in 18th and 19th Century  costumes strolling around town, but today it was quiet. New Jersey is visible in the distance in these scenes taken in Battery Park, so named for the hill which once held a gun battery to protect the town from pirates, who plagued New Castle, so they say. Between 1926 and 1951, a ferry operated across the river just north of this point and crossing into Pennsville, New Jersey.  It ran until the first of the Delaware Memorial Bridges opened in 1951. Old New Castle was the colonial capital of Delaware, and after the capital was moved to Dover during the Revolutionary War, it was the seat of New Castle County. Today it is a town with an elite historic district containing several house museums and an historic hexagonal library designed in 1892 by the famous Philadelphia architect, Frank Furness.                  Fans of Old New Castle received good news this week. In a previous posting, we learned how J. S. Cornell & Son of Cherry St. in Philadelphia were restoring a Palladian window in the c. 1800 George Read II House in New Castle, Delaware. They were installing J-channel weatherstripping on the sides of the window. For residential installations, they do not use this type of weatherstripping on the bottom of windows, but a spring-type weatherstripping so there is no danger of bending it with frequent use.                  Next we see Mr. Shainline attaching a piece of cotton sash cord to the window weight. We had the rare opportunity last week to watch the re-installation of a restored Palladian window at a house museum in Old New Castle, Delaware.  The George Read II House was built around 1800 by the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This window is at the end of the hall on the second floor and has a view of the Delaware River. The property is owned by the Delaware Historical Society. The work is being done by Dale Frens of Frens & Frens Architects under the Save America's Treasures program. The contractor is J. S. The original capitol city of Delaware, Historic Old New Castle, DE is a beautiful colonial riverfront town. It was established in 1651 and it is also where William Penn landed. It was originally settled in 1651 under Peter Stuyvesant with the Dutch West India Company. It was then captured by the Swedish in 1654 and was recaptured the very next year by the Dutch. In 1664 the British took over and that's when it became New Castle. Eventually this land was conveyed to William Penn. This transfer was contested by Lord Baltimore and the boundary disputes were settled by Mason-Dixon who if course were made famous by the Mason-Dixon line running at the south border of Pennsylvania and the western border of Delaware. New Castle Delaware- Today in Old New Castle about 2 dozen home owners opened their historic homes to the public for the 84th annual  "A Day in Old New Castle" Calvin Marshall the owner of the Van Dyke House was one of the residents to give his time and efforts and allowed people to tour his home that was visited by Marquis de Lafayette a French military office and supporter of America during the Revolutionary war.  The home was built in 1820. For the 10th year the Delaware Air National Guard held its Plane Pull for the Special Olympics.  The event held over the weekend at the Air Guard Base on Basin Road had a some special guests including Miss Delaware USA 2008 Vincenza Carrieri-Russo who helped to pull the plane with 4.5 inch heels!  Teen USA 2008 Bethany Brindley, 18, of Wilmington was there but she wore Nikes.Over the last 10 years the Plane pull has helped raise more than $150,000 for the Special Olympics of Delaware. Guard members help out on SundayMiss Delaware USA 2008 Vincenza Carrieri-Russo shows off her red patent stilettos after helping pull a plane for the annual National Guard fundraiser. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________Larry HultbergDelaw... 05/05/2008

New Castle, Delaware was originally settled by the Dutch in 1651, under Peter Stuyvesant The original name of New Castle was Fort Casimir. This was changed to "Trefaldigheet" ("Trinity") following its capture by the Swedes on Trinity Sunday, 1654. The Dutch recaptured the city in 1655 changing the name to New Amstel.  The British routed the Dutch in 1664 andit became New Castle. The Dutch again seized the town in 1673 but it was returned to Great Britain the next year under the Treaty of Westminster.
