A recent visit to Claymont, Delaware for their annual tour turned out to be a little architectural history feast. One building I have always wanted to know more about was the Grubb-Worth Mansion. It stands behind a stone wall on Philadelphia Pike, also known as Route 13 and once called The King’s Highway. This 1783 stone home is now owned by the Holy Rosary Parish and the interior has had many changes to suit the needs of owners through the years. But the key to a building such as this is the basement, and I was lucky enough to have the guide, also named Carolyn, take me down to give me a feel for earlier details, such as the foundations for fireplaces long since removed from the main floor. In the early 20th century, it became the home of Edward Worth, owner of nearby Worth Steel. At t...

Ashbourne Hills prices have strengthened on a slight fall in activity. In our last August 2013 Ashbourne Hills Update, prices had been basically stable for the last several years with an uptick in activity in 2012 as the market initially responded to the lower prices. For 2013 as a whole, there were 18 completed sales having an average price of $179,000 and averaging 72 days on the market. Final prices ranged from $75,000 to $256,000 reflecting the wide range in condition and amenities available. In 2014 year to date prices have risen with 9 completed sales averaging $199,000. Once again, we are seeing a wide range of final sales prices from $70,000 to $250,000. The average days on the market has also fallen to 51. In addition, there are 3 properties under contract with an average askin...

Ashbourne Hills continues to see solid home sales activity with stable pricing. As was seen in my last Ashbourne Hills / Radnor Green Home Sales Update in September 2012, home sale activity in Ashbourne Hills continues to be solid with mostly stable pricing. Sales in Ashbourne Hills peaked in 2006 with 35 sales at an average price of $227,000. Prices remained steady into 2008 until the recession took hold. Average prices fell into the teens in 2009 and 2010, and then fell to a low of $176,000 in 2011 with only 9 sales - prices were down over 22% from their peak. Ashbourne Hills sales activity quickly responded to the lower prices with 28 sales in 2012 at an average price of $181,000. Individual sale prices ranged from $115,000 to $220,000. The wide range in prices reflect the diverse ar...

With rising sales and lower prices, Ashbourne Hills and Radnor Green should remain a great home choice through 2012. Ashbourne Hills is a nice community located just off Darley Rd in North Wilmington with a Claymont address. With over 600 homes, Ashbourne Hills contains a great mixture of split level, ranch, and colonial house styles. The community is ideally located just south of Naamans Rd, north of Harvey Rd and west of the Philadelphia Pike providing immediate access to all of North Wilmington. With easy access to both to I-95 and I-495, it is a great location for commuting into Wilmington, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. Development in Ashbourne Hills began in the mid 1950s. Per the tax records, the earliest homes were completed in 1953 with the bulk of the construction finished by 1...

**** Open House Sunday May 20 from 1-3 at 15 Ruby Dr, Ashbourne Hills, Claymont DE **** After seeing both activity and prices fall in recent years, Claymont is now beginning to see a rise in both areas. With its prime location at the mouth of  the Naamans Creek, the Claymont area has been continuously occupied for centuries. Although named after the local Lenape chief by the first western inhabitants, in 1856 the area was renamed Claymont after the former family plantation of the pastor of the local Episcopal Church. Originally an agricultural area, Claymont later developed as a resort area and finally as an industrial community. Claymont has always been on important transportation routes. In the colonial period it was located on the Kings Highway connecting the Colonies and running fro...

HGTV's new show, Showhouse Showdown, created quite a stir in the otherwise quiet Darley Green townhouse development in Claymont, Delaware. Often noted as the site of the now demolished Brookview apartment community, its previous claim to fame was as the home of Joe Biden's family. The "Showhouse Showdown" format comes from an Irish television show by the same name, to which HGTV bought the rights.  No other design show actually reveals 10 rooms, according to publicity. "We start side by side, revealing one before the first commercial. What is ... unique is that the public actually decides who wins." Most design-competition shows only reveal the final product in the last quarter of the show, and the winner is determined by other people involved or the host. So the first...

A new, state-of-the-art Claymont Library could finally be a reality. And that's no fairytale. Without much fanfare, Gov. Jack Markell included $1.5 million in funding for the construction of a new library in next year's budget, prompting the county to move Claymont up in its own queue. New Castle County Executive Chris Coons won't give his budget address until March 16, but when he does, expect it to include as much as $4 million for the library. The cost of the new 15,000-square-foot facility is north of $7 million however, and while the Friends of Claymont Library have pledged $500,000, the county would still have to bond additional money if any actual work is going to begin before the fall of 2011. While those are big numbers, they're small details to the longtime patrons and employe...

New Castle County Police Officer Saves Choking Baby Claymont Delaware-  New Castle County Police Officer  Wesley Neeman saved the life of a choking baby last week during a traffic stop.  He was approached by a frantic mother who told him her 3 month old daughter was not breathing. Officer Neeman called for a ambulance and patted the child on her back until she started breathing again. This story is a great reminder that the police are there to help you when you are in trouble.  Hats off to Officer Neeman!

Also known as the Robinson House, this building was built in 1723 on the site of the 1624  Naaman's Creek settlement in what is now known as Claymont Delaware. It is located near the Pennsylvania border and the shores of the Delaware River, on Route 13, once known as the King's Highway. The only original building from the early settlement is the Block House, a fortress-like structure on the northeast corner of the property. On the National Register of Historic Places, the Robinson House was used as a The Naaman's Tea House in the early 20th Century.  It was furnished by volunteers, and is open periodically for special events.
