Wilton, CT - It Takes Work To Have Curb Appeal When the vines seem to win the battle.     We have bad vines and good vines in Wilton CT.     The bad vines seem to win all of the battles on the properties that are not cared for - bittersweet, wild rose, grape vines, euonymus vines, and poison ivy seem to grow at every roadside and in all of the deep woods.   The bittersweet vines are popular with those who are creating Christmas wreaths for the front doors, but not popular with those trying to get the seedlings out of their woods.   Same goes for wild rose, grape vines, and of course, poison ivy!    Wild rose at least has redeeming pretty flowers, but - poison ivy has no redeeming value, yet some folks in Wilton CT keep it growing on their properties!  Why don't folks care about their cu...

The storm was horrific, and the authorities are still wondering if there was a tornado involved.   Wednesday evening, from the Hudson Valley to Long Island, including the mid and Eastern part of Fairfield County,  huge thunderstorms racked the land, leaving trees uprooted and crossing driveways, roads, homes, on cars, etc.      Just past this photo was a "war zone"  that I was not allowed to enter.   The tree folks and CL&P were working hard to restore sanity and power to the area.

Keeping the World Green (or Blue - Tahoe)       is such an important concept.   There are so many areas of this country that still do not recycle, and then there are areas that  are so thoroughly into it, that they have hardly produce any garbage at all.    Why not Wilton, CT In the San Francisco area, they recycle everything - even your grass clippings!   Just about the only things not recycled are the table scraps from your table.   If you have a dog that you feed those to, you are just about nil on your garbage.  They proudly recycle paper, magazines, bottles - glass and otherwise, cans, all trimmings from the yard, cardboard, styrofoam,  - did I miss something?    Why not Wilton, CT? In Los Angeles, I have found the same thing.    Everything is recycled that can be recycled.  There ...

There's a Bear in Them Woods!  in Wilton, CT For the last six months or so, the town of Wilton has been following a mother bear and her cub, named Lily.    There have been feeding stations set  up, and folks out with video watching them off and on.   They are not quite regular in their visits, so they are not always caught in sight.       Last week, on Monday, a bear was  spotted in Redding, in Georgetown on Tuesday, and three spottings in Wilton on Wednesday.   Wilton police sent out email notification of the sightings at 8:25, - first sighting at 6 am near the Wilton Riding Club on Riding Club Road off of Olmstead Hill Road.   By 6:30, it was spotted at Merwin Meadows on Merwins Lane off of Lovers Lane.     At 8 am, it was spotted on Belden Hill Road south of Drum Hill Road.   It was ...

Trees Are Part of the Property Dance - Good Lookin' - Part ThreeGood looks are necessary and desirable in most facets of our lives.    A well maintained property with pruned, properly sized trees, and a variety of species and colors is always attractive to a buyer or homeowner.    It's always nice to be able to approach your property with pride.   In Wilton, CT, we have such large trees, it is imperative that they be maintained. There are several key ingredients to having "good lookin' trees."       1.  Well pruned trees     2.  Healthy trees     3.  Properly placed trees     4.  Change of color, texture, bark, etc. with season changes     5.  Variety of size of treesThe most important thing of all is to respect the natural characteristics of a tree.   If it naturally grows to 60 feet t...

Trees Are Part of the Property Dance - Size Matters - Part TwoYour property is all part of a choreographed dance.   Each part plays a part in the whole.    Without one part, the remaining parts are disfunctional.   Trees are a large part of the dance, and should fit just like the flowers, the green lawn, the freshly painted exterior, and the beautifully updated and decorated interior.   The size of the tree matters in relation to where it is on the property, and where in relation to the house. The plantings around a house and on the land should complement the size, style, location, of the home and the area.   A home in Arizona or Texas would look silly with a huge New England maple tree next to it (and I doubt it could grow in that climate..)   A home in Wilton CT in New England would l...

Father's Day - lots of Memories of the PastWe all have fathers who have taught us something important, whether it is "what to be," or "what not to be." My father gave me the ability to think on my feet, and never be afraid of being a woman.    We can do almost anything a man can do , some things better......   He taught me to analyze a problem, dissect it, and 99% of the time, solve it.    He encouraged us to try everything around us - sports, fixing our homes, building crazy things in the woods out of whatever we found, etc.     Part of that was the times, after the war, and part was that he was an engineer, so it came naturally.     I can remember trying anything that came to mind, and usually, after lots of tries, succeeding.    It was the process that I loved almost more than the en...

Four Wind Farms in Wilton, CT - off of Grumman Hill and Chestnut Hill     is   perhaps one of the most beautiful areas in Wilton.    It boasts gracious traditional colonials in a lovely  South Wilton neighborhood, just off of historical Chestnut Hill and Grumman Hill Road.  Until 1994, it was a very large farm, partly in Norwalk, but mostly in Wilton.   In 2003 and 2004, the Four Winds Farms was sold to a very prestigious builder who divided it into approximately 15- 20 lots, bordered by protected conservation land.    All of the lots have been sold and developed, and all of the homes are very elegant and built with great attention to detail.  Most have beautiful formal rooms, high ceilings, detailed moldings, French doors, Palladium windows, soaring fireplaces, and are located in a gre...

Things Not to Do With Your New Video Camera I finally invested in the HD Flip Video Camera - for those who don't have one yet, if you are a member of Costco, there's a discount coupon if you purchase it - no coupon necessary.    No excuses anymore....   I need to go back and get my discount. I learned very quickly NOT to pan back and forth - just slowly one way.  Let folks "smell the roses" as you go. I learned also on the boat that it can be very rocky and uncomfortable to watch in replay - only when the boat is smooth is it good.... I learned that if you zoom in it gets fuzzy for distance, so only use it closer. I learned that it's very difficult to video while walking and talking. This is a short video I took on the boat over Memorial Day approaching Wolfboro, NH on Lake Winnipesauke...

Who Cares about the top (roof)?  You cannot see it! We can see the icing on a cake,  we can see the grass on a lawn, we can see the flowers atop a plant, but usually, we cannot see the top of a house!   Is your roof as important as the rest of the house for appearances sake?  Would your serious buyer care?     I believe that the roof is almost more important than the front door, since any buyer worth his salt will just see lots of dollar signs when he looks at a bad roof.   Just as noticeable, is a great roof!   A roof in good condition will last as many as 25-30 years - and will not cost the buyer a great deal of money for a very long time!   A bad furnace doesn't cost 1/2 of what a bad roof costs, and folks walk away from house with a bad furnace!       Many buyers do not look up - ju...

Recycling  in Our Area - Styrofoam goes where? We are all taught throughout our lives now to recycle.  Which is awesome!!!!    But, ......    what do we do with the styrofoam?   Didn't that disappear because that was awful toxic stuff?  No, we now can recycle styrofoam with our bottles and cans here in Wilton, CT.   The town is collecting plastics #s 1-7, metal, glass, newspapers, etc, in the recycling program.  Yea!!!   All of the styrofoam that is used to package the electronic items you purchase can be recycled.  Not the styrofoam peanuts - they still go to the UPS store.  I actually looked closely at a container the other day that was styrofoam, and it had a triangle and a number in it!   That's what got me realizing that things had changed.   Perhaps it could be that I NEVER have s...

We Had Awesome Entertainment for the Relay Survivors!!    last night at the Relay For Life in Wilton, CT It turned out to be a beautiful night.   Sometimes we have to battle the rains, but this year the weather was perfect for the Relay for Life in Wilton, CT for all of those good souls who walk all night  to raise money for the cancer fight.    They started set up in the morning, then the fine touches for our dinner began at 3 in the afternoon.    We began the table set ups, the balloons, registration set up, microphones (first time- yea!), food tables, etc.     By 5 we had already  registered many cancer Survivors and their families,  and by 5:30, we had quite a big crowd all with their purple Survivor shirts on, ready for a good celebration evening.    The theme this year for the Rel...

Relay For Life Comes to the Survivors in Wilton CT This Coming Weekend! This is the most amazing and fun event of the year.   I became involved in the Survivors' Dinner event three years ago, and keep returning eagerly every year!     The stories that are shared with me in the weeks leading up to the event are both heartwarming and heart breaking.   Each year, we have a large tent with tables and chairs reserved for the Survivors and their caregivers on the evening of the Relay For Life.     Beginning at approximately 3 pm, the Survivors begin to arrive.  They all seem to know where to go to find their tent.   I check them in, and in the process give them a ticket for the "give aways" after dinner.    I have spent the three weeks prior to the event walking into the merchants around town...
