A summer blend of Colors that are longer than their Day.We have a stretch of flowers along the border of the driveway that offer much color, even if short lived. There is a mixture of iris, lily of the valley and day lilies.  Normally we get the day lilies in yellow and occasionally some with a reddish tint.Maybe it was because of the nature of our last winter, but this year the colors are so much brighter and far more hues than we have ever had before. They are also up longer than in the past.  It is so pleasant to come up the drive and have the colors waving in the breeze. Summer Flowers that Give more than 24 Hours of Delight

For the benefit of the Woodland Touchdown Club Here in Prospect CT, the Woodland high School Football Team will hold a recycling drive for cans and bottles on Saturday July 18. The proceeds will go toward their costs of travel, etc for their games and practices.Several groups collect recyclables a few times a year, and we always save our cans and bottles just for these drives. With 6 months worth of empties in various oversized plastic bags, I will load up the car and drive to the parking lot of St Anthony's church in the center of town. There the volunteers will gladly take all the bags and carry them to the sorting area and then into the truck .  The hours for the collections are from 9 am to 1 PM  I may leave them a few dollars worth of empties, but that will be so much more rewarding...

The Top 5 Reasons Prospect CT Is the Best Small Town in Connecticut A few years ago, Money magazine honored Prospect CT as one of it's top 300 small towns in the country.  This was based on quality of life, services to residents, average income of the families and the school systems. There are so many things that people take for granted in their communities, especially when it is a large city or town that offers so many options.  In a small town of 9,600 residents it could be very easy to venture into the neighboring larger towns for diversions.  It does happen for the finer restaurants and the arts, but for the day to day  life events, Prospect CT offers as much or more than it's neighbors. The town Center, once called the Meeting Center is still the location where a majority of many ac...

Show us Your Home for The SummerMany of us here in the Northeast have shown the photos of the heavy snow accumulations we get in winter.  We do know there is color in the dormant vegetation underneath. Part of our distress with the snow and cold is we do know how pleasant our yards can be when in full bloom. We have a yard where there is always a pleasant color on a bush or flower in bloom.  It was part of the reason we appreciated the house when we bought it.Trying to do an overhead, I'll try to offer a glimpse of what we enjoy. Area 1 is a rock garden at the entrance to the driveway.  Within the garden is flox, which offers up the light blue and pink colors in earl spring.  There are also daffodils within the garden for the early color and the bush that backs the garden gives up a pret...

Today is not only the longest day of the year, but also Father's Day.  We did do the big barbecue that we normally do, but still managed to convince mom and dad to have dinner with us.  Dad, Joe Silva, has always been there when we needed help and was a hard worker to make sure his family was never without. Back in 1956, he took us all to Portugal where we could meet and visit with the relatives that were still there, including  both our grandmothers. Both he and my mother were born in the US, Dad in Erie PA, and mom ion New Bedford MA.They both came back to the US just before World War 2, and as he was an American citizen, shortly after the declaration, he was drafted into the Navy.  As kids, we were always at the ball park, after all there were no computer games back then and watching...

I noticed a bit of color on the ground as I walked along a fairway recently. As I got closer I realized it was a  butterfly, and it stayed on the ground as if posing for me. The yellow and black so striking against the green of the grass.  It then turned to be somewhat ironic that we would have more butterflies around us the following day as we were attending a wedding of our niece. The second and third were made as wedding favors by a friend of the bride and they did an incredible job, but still not the perfection of Mother Nature. Nature's Beauty Can be Copied but Never Duplicated

Throughout the summer, there are special events all over the state.  The intent is to get people to appreciate the history of our state as well as the educational and entertainment value.  A detailed calendar of events can be found at the official web site, ctvisit.com Here in Prospect CT, the Hotchkiss House will be open.  It is the location of the Prospect CT Historical Society.Built in 1819, the Hotchkiss House was the main building for the farm.  For over 160 years, a Hotchkiss family member lived in the house, and were all prominent in the development of the town of Prospect CT.  The museum will be open for visitors this Saturday.  Among the things to do will be an archaeological dig on the grounds to attempt to find artifacts, as has been done in the past. If a trip to Prospect CT...

Prospect CT, where the Living is Easy Prospect CT has been our home for 20 years.  We selected this town because of its convenience to getting to the highways needed for our work commute. One to Hartford CT and the other to New Haven CT.  The town was established in 1827 and is surrounded by Bethany, Waterbury, Cheshire and Naugatuck. The population of the town was recorded at 9,405 for the 2012 census and has carried the distinction as one of Money's top 300 towns.  The residents of Prospect CT are proud to call themselves "The Best Small Town in Connecticut".  Prospect CT is essentially a residential community but the business district through the center of town offers products and services consistent with those needed in a small town. The school system in Prospect CT is Region 16, a ...

The Azaleas Share their Colors in Prospect CT After such a brutal winter, the colors of spring are so welcome.  Our daffodils have just about gone away as have the tulips and the hyacinths. It's time for the azaleas and the rhododendrons to share their colors and they are just about exploded with their colors. The winter did take it's toll on the rhododendrons as a couple of them lost a lot of their leaves and are very slow in coming aroundThe flox in the rock garden is into it's prime and we will have the rest of the area planted with begonias this week for the rest of the summer color. The white is long gone and will not be missed.  Maybe Not the Azaleas of Agusta, But Still Pretty
