Today is the first day of the new smoking tax.  Before today, Connecticut taxed cigarettes at the rate of $2 per pack.  As of today that is now $3 per pack - a whopping 50% increase! Since I have never smoked, the tax itself does not affect me but I recognize that fact that it is getting a bit excessive!  I hope more people think it's too expensive and decide to quit.  In the long run, if more people quit, it should lower the states long term medical costs.
