A few years ago, I was fishing on Lake Pueblo in Colorado and spotted this American White Pelican sitting on a stump sticking up out of the lake.  I got my camera ready and, using the trolling motor, slowly drifted toward the big bird.  I was lucky to get fairly close before he decided to takeoff and I was able to get about a dozen shots of him struggling to get airborne. Then, I combined six of the images in photoshop to show this progressive sequence of the pelican's attempt to fly.  They do have to work very hard to get in the air!  :-)

Lots to talk about this week! Getting personal - I had been having trouble with the ball of my right foot.  I wasn't sure if it was a fallen arch, arthritis, something sinister, or what.  After almost three months of pain, I went to see local podiatrist Gordon P. Rheaume (1513 Moore Ave., Pueblo, CO 81005; 719-564-2391, www.pafoot.com).  He thought I had tendonitis, gave me a shot, peeled me off the ceiling (the shot REALLY hurt!), and sent me home.  I was completely better in just days!  Now, I feel pretty stupid for limping around for so long.  Lesson here, if something hurts, SEE A DOCTOR!  I strongly recommend the "Foot God", Gordon P. Rheaume if you have foot problems! I caught the tail end of this on the Clark Howard radio broadcast (http://clarkhoward.com).  You can get cheap gla...

I get a lot of questions from people wanting to know what they should ask, hopefully their expert educates them before they start. The To-Do List The process starts with finding out what buyers can afford, and that is where many first-timers are led astray. recently helped a man who used a website that calculated what he could afford, and the result was far off base, higher than he could actually pay. Consumers need to do research and find out exactly how to improve their credit to be approved for a loan. The first check on any first-time buyer's to-do list is to visit a lender and find out exactly they can afford. The next is to visit another. And possibly another. Different lenders have different ideas and different ways of interacting with customers. The market has changed. Early thi...

Here are some guidelines to use when you begin searching for licensed contractors. By using them, and the other steps that follow, you could save yourself from financial risk and other future problems with unlicensed contractors. 1 Hire only licensed contractors.  2 Check a contractor's license number with your state's licensing or registrar board.  Find a list of state licensing boards at: http://www.nationalcontractors.com/licensing/ 3 Get at least three bids.  4 Get three references from each bidder and review past work in person.  5 Make sure all project expectations are in writing and only sign the contract if you completely understand the terms.  6 Confirm that the contractor has workers' compensation insurance for employees.  7 Never pay more than 10% down of $1,000, whichever i...
