On the way out of the town of Nederland, heading down Highway 119 toward Boulder, is the Barker Dam. The dam holds water in the Barker Reservoir. There are not as many cars pulled over at that stretch of road. Not like you'll find further down where there's fishing in Boulder Creek or hiking paths or Boulder Falls. But there is a view at that spot looking back at Nederland across the water. It's a clear view of the town nestled in the valley. It's a view in retrospect. As a visitor, you probably don't think to stop and shoot this photo on the way into town. At least I didn't, and I even knew it was there. I pulled my camera lens closer to capture a little bit more detail, but the town is quite a distance from that spot at Barker Dam. This was a remarkable place to live in the mid 1970s...

How is it that people you meet in person after chatting online are always exactly like you imagined them to be? Oh, I remember back in the day, like in 1995 -- which doesn't seem all that long ago to me but 17 years have passed since I met my husband online -- everybody talked about how dangerous it was to meet a stranger from the Internet. Because they might not be what they seem. Yet, every person I have ever met has never been different than I suspected. Well, perhaps more charming, more beautiful and more delightful in person, but not the other way around. I had the extreme pleasure yesterday of meeting Mary Douglas from United Country Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. She lives in the mountains near Fort Collins. Since I was on vacation in Nederland, Colorado, Mary dr...

Once the Rocky Mountains touches your heart, you're never the same again. John Denver or no John Denver. That's the thing about living in the mountains. A couple of my friends who came back to Nederland for the Reunion (the Reunion is for people who used to live in the area in the 1970s and 1980s) are seriously considering moving back. One lives in Texas and the other is from Florida. Here is a photo of the sky at 9,000' elevation. Can't you smell the pine? Lady Jake and Red Ted are resting on a log after hiking the Hessie Trail near Lake Eldora. Both used to work at Lake Eldora Ski Resort. Ted says once you work at a ski resort, you can ski free at any other ski resort in Colorado, which is a great perk no matter what kind of job you have there, I suppose. I am not a person who skis. ...

I knew someday I would do this. That's why I have systems and don't deviate. Because the minute I make an exception to a system and change a process, that's when something horrible will happen. It just never fails. I've often wondered when I would download photos and accidentally delete the originals without saving. For that reason, before I empty my trash folder, I always open the folder where I have copied the photos to verify they exist in that folder. Always. But not last night. Last night I dragged my photo folder to the trash, emptied the trash and ejected the card. Sure enough, there were no photos in the folder I had created. I did not copy the originals to the folder. It probably serves me right for not following protocol. I set up that system so this would never happen. It has...

Carousel of Happiness Where else but Nederland CO could you find a place called the Carousel of Happiness?  Nederland is a small community (approximately 1,500 residents) about 15 miles outside of the college town of Boulder, home to the University of Colorado, and 50 miles northwest of Denver.  Even more than most college towns, the Republic of Boulder is known for its laid-back, pot-smoking, peace-nik mentality.  It is often referred to as 40 square miles surrounded by reality.  A building moratorium in Boulder has kept the town small and the prices high, so people have filtered into neighboring areas.  From Boulder you take a gorgeous winding mountain road with breathtaking scenery.  As you drop down into the town of Nederland, you are greeted by a glorious reservoir at the foot of t...

Scores of you have emailed, called, and commented to encourage me to write.  Since November is NaNoWriMo, I opted to take the challenge and write a book.  The premise of NaNoWriMo is to complete 50,000 words of a novel in the month of November.  It is an internet event, but also includes "meet ups" in your local area.  As someone who only recently started writing, it has been a fun challenge ~ the operative word being 'challenge.' The setting for my novel is a little town outside of Boulder, Colorado (where I went to college) called Nederland.  When I was in college in the early 70s, Nederland was known as a Hippie Hangout.  (The title of the BOOK is not "Nederland - Where Hippies Grow Old" ~ that is just the setting and the title of this post :) ) Wanting to research the area to have a...

Well, one way to do it is when he dies you keep him frozen on ice. That's how Frozen Dead Guy Days got it's name. Every year on the first full weekend in March (burrrrrr....) Nederland Colorado celebrates "Grandpa Bredo" who supposedly is still kept on ice in the Tuff Shed. His grandson, a Norwegian immigrant brought his deceased "Gradpa Bredo" to Nederland Colorado in 1989 where his body lies frozen in a shed (at -109F) behind his daughter's old house. I've heard it said that Trygue (the grandson) wasn't aware of American taboos about storing deceased relatives with yard tools...anyway Trygue was finally deported by the US government (not because of his grandfather..), and the City of Nederland Colorado grandfathered in Grandpa Bredo, against all odds, and Grandpa is allowed to remain ...
