The Center Village at Copper Mountain is the newest base area closest to the American Flyer and the American Eagle lifts.  The majority of the Village was built in 1999 and 2000, with Passage Point built a little later, in 2001. It is a part of what was heralded as the "rennaisance" of Copper Mountain, when Intrawest bought the resort and started redeveloping the base area.        The main cafeteria for the ski mountain is called Jack's, and it has had an awesome salad bar the last two years, even serving ahi.  I hope they have it again this season.  Jack's is right at the base of the mountain, between both lifts, and is in the Copper One Lodge building,  with retail shops, ski rental, restrooms, lockers and the Camp Hale coffee shop.  The upper floors of Copper One Lodge have 63 condom...

This is wildflower season.  I enjoy hiking and I always take my camera, but sometimes even a good camera can't do it justice.  Perhaps a better photographer would be a good idea!  My favorite hikes in Summit County involve water, and that is because the best wildflowers grow in wet areas.  Wheeler Lakes, Monte Christo, McCullough Gulch, Mesa Cortina and Mayflower Gulch, all have streams or lakes that reward you with awesome displays of flowers.  The flower to the left is Parry's Primrose and it is not found as frequently as some,  It likes very wet areas and usually is near streams.  The photograph above was taken at Wheeler lakes, not far from Copper Mountain and shows a variety of flowers.  The red ones are mostly Indian Paintbrush, a farily common flower here.  To the right are Lupin...

Here they are in a nutshell.1.  Use "book by owner" websites like www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com.  They are cheap and easy to use.2.  Use a flat fee management company (hard to find, but they are out there.)3.  Put a calendar and the rates on your websites.4.  Use the guestbook that is available free at www.rentors.org.5.  Have weekly rates.  Booking weekends only will block your guests who want to stay longer and will be paying more.6.  Encourage people to pay by check.  Credit cards cost money to take and if you get checks early you don't have to worry about them bouncing.7.  Make sure you have good looking photos and descriptive copy on your website.  Mention your points of difference between you and the competition.  My condo at Copper Mountain rents really well and makes me lots...

I remember when, just a couple of years ago, we had only 49 sales at Copper Mountain in a year, and about 170 units on the market.  Times were tough and people were selling for less than they paid for the condos just a couple of years prior.  Today the market has competely turned around, and as of today, May 5, 2007, we have 37 active listings and 155 units either sold or under contract in the last year.  That means that right now we only have about a four month supply of condos to sell, and prices are escalating. What has made the difference?  Copper Mountain has always had a very loyal group of homeowners.  Many people owned more than one condo.  When Intrawest bought Copper and built a whole new Center Village, speculators came in and bought up many of the condos, expecting to be abl...

Last week, my daughter and son-in-law, my brother-in-law, and a good friend, climbed Mt. Bierstadt, one of over 50 peaks on Colorado that are over 14,000 feet (this one 14,060).  It's not such a big thing - unless you haven't done it for years, or are not in good health, or have a prevailing fear of heights.  But, it's damned good exercise.  You literally feel like you are on top of the world.  You are not, of course.  There are dozens of higher mountains in the world.  But, you can see in all 360 degrees, other peaks, perhaps some towns, wildlife, lakes and streams.  And you are exhilarated.  Tomorrow, we're doing another hike, perhaps longer, though not a 14er.  We will climb from a subdivision between Breckenridge and Frisco up and over the Ten Mile Range and down into Copper Mountai...
