Over the River Project Posted on January 31, 2012 by Dena Stevens (719) 369.9087   There has been great debate and publicity surrounding the “Over The River” project. The world famous Cristo is planning on draping the Arkansas River with approx 6 miles of fabric. The debates include things like environmental concerns, traffic, employment, wildlife, local established business, new business and general bother to the city. Endorsements in favor of the Cristo “Over the River” project are coming in but the silence of those not endorsing the project is just about as loud. If the project is as successful as planners hope there will be approx 400,000 to 500,000 visitors to the Canon City and Royal Gorge area in a short two week period of time. My opinion as a local resident fluctuates between a...

The Royal Gorge is Colorado’s equivalent of the Grand Canyon.  Not only is it a breath taking sight, it also boasts the world's highest suspension bridge at a height of 1,053 feet.  The Arkansas River runs through the canyon.  The Royal Gorge, in Canon, is about 45 minutes to  the south-west of Colorado Springs.  This Saturday, October 1, 2011,  is the second annual  5K/10K race at the Royal Gorge . It is called the Rim to Rim - Royal Gorge Run.  All proceeds from the race will go Star Point.  This group provides essential services to children and adults with cognitive and physical challenges.  Starpoint serves Fremont, Chaffee, Custer, Denver and Jefferson Counties.  The proceeds from this race are going to a very worthy cause.  Both the 5K and 10K races will cover a challenging and sc...

June 19, 2011 Urgent Help Needed! A local Canon City family unexpected got custody of a 4 year little girl Monday night. The family is in crisis and needs help on many levels. Most urgent is clothing for the little girl. The girl came with NOTHING but bare feet and the clothes on her back.   If you have extra gently used girls clothing sizes 5-6-7 including shoes, coats, toys, a car seat / booster seat, bedding and canned or boxed food goods the family would be most grateful!   Donations of any kind can be dropped off at Century 21 Canon Land & Investment 1025 Royal Gorge Blvd. M-F 8:30 - 5:30 Saturday 8:30 - 4:30

The historic homes around Canon City and Florence are cute, fun to look at and affordable! I’ve owned a few 100+ year old houses, I like to treat them like doll houses. I  dressed them up with lace curtains, stained glass and antique fixtures and furniture. The antique houses of Florence are what drew me out of Denver and to Southern Colorado! Things to member about antique, old, historical houses: Finish the story here: http://www.realestatecoloradostyle.com/historic-homes-in-canon-city-and-florence-colorado

OK, how cool is this? Dee's Pace (719) 275 6482   624 Main St. Canon City   I asked Dee to make me a new name tag, the old one was..... getting very old. She told me no problem and I wasn't picky about what it looked like as long as my name was spelled correctly. This is what she came up with! In the mean time she's done a bunch more for friends. Call Dee and ask her to make you a name tag. She'll probably have you send her your business card. I'm not getting anything out of this, I just love my new name tag! AND she only charged me $10 ! If you live local, she's next door to the Owl and across from the St. Cloud. Tell Dee you want a name tag like Denas!

I don't write many testimonials, and maybe I should write more. But I have to tell you about the experience I had today. As I was driving to an appointment I found out the hard way I had a flat tire. And not just flat but, a dead tire. I started calling local shops via Google on my phone. I called 3 local shops none of whom would come help me until I got to the 4th shop Buddy Rays in Canon City.     Now you can see I wasn't stuck in the middle of nowhere, I was in the "Tri-City" area. But there aren't many addresses to reference to. I gave the dispatcher my location the best I could. I knew I was near the crossroads of Cty Rd 84 and Cty Rd 85. And the actual road is sometimes called Shenandoah and some times called Central. And it's not far from Scutti Hill.         So the long and shor...

Here are just a few things you don't know about me: 1) I'm afraid of birds. I had birds as pets as a kid and every last one of them died within a few days of getting them home. I have a better record with dogs. 2) I've been on a variety of TV shows, but until you catch a late rerun of an old show on some obscure TV channel you will never see me. 3) Until very recently I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission. Six months later I'm still trying to get it right! Please ignore the marks on the back bumper. 4) I know A LOT of people. I keep notebooks of business cards. Don't be afraid to give me your card, I use these for reference and give them to other people who may need your service or talent. 5) I helped write a novela - it was rejected by publishers 15 times! 6) I've been ...

The Fifth Annual Brew-Ha-Ha is just around the corner (Saturday, May 9!!) and we're ready for a wall of suds to hit Canon City!    What better way to spend the day BEFORE Mother's Day?  You simply can't go wrong with comedy and microbrews in the park!!  Beer tasting session with stand-up comedians from 3 to 6 pm, and then . . . . . . we'll have the fabulous "Atomic Fireballs," featuring Johnny Watson and Carlos Crull, back for another terrific performance from 6 to 9 pm . . . . I guarantee you'll be up dancing in the grass!   Tickets are only $20 each for the beer tasting, and believe me . . . . that's a great deal for the selection of beers and comedic talent you'll encounter!  And it's a major fundraiser for the Fremont Center for the Arts - we really need your support!

Recently I've become involved with Habitat for Humanity in Fremont County Colorado. If you don't know about HFHI : click here http://www.geocities.com/fremonthfh/ Volunteers do most of the work on the houses as well as the home owners and future home owners. Homes are sold for no profit and no interest loans. The Fremont Chapter recently received the gift of a house and a substantial amount of money. The house will be rehabilitated and brought up to code. New appliances, carpet, paint, front steps and walkway are all on order. But the house is in good shape over all. It's going to be a great place for somebody. All this got me thinking. Let's face it: We've all been in houses that could use A LOT of help. We've all been in properties that we thought should be leveled We've all been in ...
