Leaving any place after a vacation is always a little bit sad. I had to struggle with those feelings yesterday when we headed off down Interstate 5 and left Mt. Shasta behind. We discovered we couldn't quite leave the area without making at least one more stop. Initially, we had hoped to delay our departure a little and obtain a late checkout at Mt. Shasta Resort, but the front desk couldn't give it to us. No authority, I guess. Instead, she switched our call to the housekeeping police, which my husband said barked at him. No, no extension. Not even an hour. Get out. Go. This was not the niceness we had otherwise encountered in Mt. Shasta. Well, there was the freaked out police officer who almost drew his gun on my husband as he approached with hands in pocket to ask how far he could pa...

As a day goes for real estate, I imagine today and Monday will be eerily quiet. At least that's my prediction and reason for not feeling guilty that I'm not working away, even though it's a holiday weekend. It's very difficult when you're a top agent in Sacramento to find time to get away, to actually not use your phone, for example. OK, putting it into the glove box while we went on a hike counts in my book as not using my phone and showing restraint against the urge to always answer it because another agent might need information on a listing or a buyer might need to see a home. It helps to chill and relax a little bit. To unwind and focus my attention elsewhere, even if it's only for a few hours of a wilderness retreat. You can see all the photos and read more in my personal blog tod...

When time is precious and you only have so much of it, even if you're standing in front of an Eileen Fisher outlet in the middle of nowhere in Mt. Shasta of all places, it takes an incredible amount of resistance not to walk inside. But see, this is where I think through things and it's not just a matter of walking inside. It would involve marveling over the new fall collection, removing just about every article of clothing to try on new outfits, then sending the sales clerk back to the racks to search for a super small petite size, and that doesn't count spending upwards of at least a $1,000 bucks just to get out of the store, which is why I did not venture inside Eileen Fisher, even though I desperately wanted to. No, instead we went into a jewelry store where I was mesmerized by the ...

While traveling in the Northern area of California, you get to see some of the older cities and buildings. I got a chance to stop briefly in the very small town of Castello, CA , near Dunsmuir, just off Interstate 5. Though it was a small town, it has a Post Office. I had to get a quick photo of the small detailed vintage post office box door.

I went for a short jog this morning through the town of Yreka, CA this morning, it is a small town. Many of the government building are nestled in the residential area of town and are quite small compared to most cities. I could not believe the size of the county jail, I guess there is not much crime in the Yreka area.       View Larger Map

I always get a bit nervous about the condition of some of the hotels and motels that I schedule when traveling. I don’t have a problem when the city is large and has some of the major lodging chains. However, the fear jumps up when I have to stay in some remote areas. I traveled to such a place today. I had to stay in Yreka for a volunteer commitment and had to reserve a place to stay a while back. There are others that were doing the same, and I got a chance to see their place before getting to mine. Though they stayed a little cheaper, the Best Western that I booked was a luxury castle in comparison. I am staying at the Best Western Minors Inn here in Yreka. The unit has been recently updated with new furniture and accessories, not your standard small town motel. I would highly reco...

Welcome to Dunsmuir, CA... Is there anything better to do on a cool, Spring day than a short drive to one of our favorite little towns, Dunsmuir, California! It's quaint, it's historic and it embodies the best of smalltown America!  Dunsmuir is one of those little river and railroad towns you wished you had grown up in. Actually, come to think of it...I did grow up in a railroad town (population 4,200)! Dunsmuir reminds me of my old stomping grounds in Connell, WA in many ways. Dunsmuir is know for having "the best water on earth"...they're serious about their water. I like that you can walk from the local Cafe to the river and back to your Bed & Breakfast or log cabin. Some of the best restaurants between the San Francisco Bay Area and Portland are located in this little town of 2300 p...

Redding CA - Visiting Mount Shasta on a Perfect Day--we were up in Mount Shasta on Sunday to meet with a client about a commercial listing. We always take our puppy Ginger with us and that forces us to find a beautiful spot to get outdoors with her and let her have some fun. We have our parks and special places that we always take her for her little break. She likes to roll in the green grass and fight with her "Daddy". These are the good things in life that sustain us. Here is a shot of the park where we took Ginger to have our special part of the day. It truly was a perfect day in our beautiful lives! There are some fabulous buying opportunities out there for home buyers, from foreclosure homes that are priced under market to short sales and private party home sales. Add to that the range fixed interest rates have been hovering at and incentives like the first time home buyer $8,000 tax credit, and it's been a pretty busy summer selling season.   There are people who although they have good credit, stable employment and income and WANT to buy, but because of a high cost of living saving the down payment and closing costs to purchase a home have gotten in the way of purchasing a home. Maybe you sold a home, but did so by the skin of your teeth, leaving no funds to buy another one with, and now you wonder if they are going to be renters for the long haul. Possibly, you have managed to ...

There is not doubt that Mt Shasta holds an important place in many people's hearts...Whether you think Mt Shasta is a Vortex or is a special place for other reasons, the facts remain the same...it's a very special mountain to many people...Native American and not. I great up in the McCloud and Mt Shasta areas.I always tell people from outside the area that I grew up in Mt Shasta even though it was McCloud because about 99% of the people out there (in the larger cities) know Mt Shasta and about 25% outside the area know the name McCloud. Whether you are interested in either Mt Shasta or McCloud I feel confident that I can be of assistance to you...having grown up in that area I know and remember many interesting things...Things that many agents would never know. Feel free to contact me s...

Staying in McCloud California is like taking a trip back in time. McCloud is home to approx 1500 residents and is an alpine town located about 75 miles north and a little east of the city of Redding Ca. There are many places to see and stay in McCloud California. The recommended spot to stay is one of two "Victorian Cottages". The Victorian Cottages are operated by a couple that have lived in the town for approx 50 years! Contact Susan at 530-964-2292 to inquire about availability and rates. Talk about know the area...McCloud offers shopping downtown and the Sunset Dinner Train. There are many places to see and things to do if you just want to "Get away from it all" and relax. Here's to quiet and solitude! Regards, Rick Goates

The city of Mt.Shasta is located about an hour north of the City of Redding.Mt Shasta offers some incredible scenery and some of the best water on earth! In recent years there have been some water bottling plants show up in and around Mt Shasta,so the water MUST be good! Real Estate in Mt Shasta is higher than in Redding to the south 75 miles. Some properties have incredible views of the Mountain itself and command higher prices. If you are interested in finding a nice place in Mt Shasta feel free to contact me. I lived in the area for 18 years so I have a good feel for finding your the right property at the right price.  HOW ABOUT THIS FOR A VACATION HOME?  This photo was taken 7-16-2008 at Lake Tahoe from a from a Sea-Doo that I was driving. I shot several homes over on Crystal Bay - North Shore.  This home was one of the most impressive. I can't even imagine what the inside looks like and or the view from inside, being built approximately 500 feet up the cliff of Lake Tahoe.  photo by: Robert Swetz If anyone knows who owns this beautiful piece of property, please come forward. Traveling a ways off Interstate 5 on Highway 89 at the base of stunning Mount Shasta, it isn't long before we come to the town of McCloud. We've been by the turn off to this historic town several times on journeys back and forth down Highway 89, and have wanted to experience the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train ride that takes off from McCloud, but will have to reserve that ride in advance, as it is a popular one. So Saturday, we meandered through the Brown Dog Gallery, the McCloud Heritage Junction Museum, and the shops throughout town, scoping out some great options at Bed & Breakfasts we plan to one day come back to stay at when we take the train. Still not ready to head back to beautiful Southern Oregon yet, we followed the advice of the talented artist we met, Claudia Ellis, at the Brown...

Our youngest child loves seeing the "Welcome to California" sign so quickly after heading out on journeys from our home in Medford, Oregon.  Only 30 miles north of the California/Oregon State line, we frequently find ourselves back in California, the State we relocated from in 2004.       Saturday was one of those days, when we unanimously decided our family time would start out at the Yreka Gold Rush Days festival. After meandering through the streets of Yreka, California looking at the offerings available at the many booths along the way, enjoying the summer sprinkling of rain, we went in search of the chili cook-off, but never found it (think we arrived too late)and our youngest ended up with the all time favorite hamburger instead. We did find Gary Nelson of Ashland Home Net and his...
