Regular visitors to the historic Venice Post Office building along the Windward Avenue Circle have likely laid eyes on a mural depicting the early history of Venice with the image of community founder Abbot Kinney at the center. The mural, created by artist Edward Biberman and entitled “Story of Venice,” was commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts of the United States and installed inside the post office in August 1941, according to the Venice Historical Society. The post office building itself was constructed as part of a project of the Work Projects Administration (WPA), an agency of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal that employed millions to conduct public works projects across the country in the 1930s and early 1940s. Under a recent proposal of the U.S. Postal Service, cus...

Did you know that part of Venice, CA & Marina Del Rey are in Tsunami Areas? As you drive from Santa Monica, CA to Marina Del Rey, CA paralleling the Pacific Coast you will see these Blue Signs. I have lived for many years less than 500 yards from the Ocean. I have not really thought much of it as I drove by these signs. I was more amused by the signs, than scared. Then when the Tsunami took place in the Indian Ocean in December 2004 (Phuket Thailand) it looked scary, nevertheless very I felt it was so removed and the incident seemed very remote to me. I even felt that it was unlikely anything of this magnitude could occur in my back yard. (I consider the beach our back yard.) Even though there were over 230,000 casualties and was one of the deadliest Earth Quakes on record. Why was that...

The basketball courts in Venice are renowned across the country for their high level of streetball; numerous NBA players developed their games or recruited on these courts.   The Venice Canals digging in 1904. The Venice Canals present day! Have you ever been to a place and wondered about the history of it? How the place came to be or how a place obtained its name. Let’s take a short journey and look at the history of “Venice of America” or as we know it today Venice, California. Venice, California dates all the way back to the year 1890. It is because of one man’s vision by the name of Abbott Kinney, a wealthy tobacco mogul and world traveler, that this amazing place exists still today. Mr. Kinney transformed a deteriorating marshland West of Los Angeles into the “Coney Island of the Pacific.”  Despite disbelief and opposition, Abbott Kinney’s dream materialized in grand style. He envisioned a resort town culturally reminiscent of Venice, Italy.  Complet...

The Venice Canals in California are getting ready for Halloween 2010. As some of you know, I have written a few blogs about this national treasure over the past few years. Many tourists visit California and go to Venice Beach and are totally oblivious to the Canals that are nearby. The ones, who are familiar with this wonderful location, look forward to visiting this great destination during the holidays. For those of you who are not familiar with the history I am enclosing an older blog about it. http://activerain.com/blogsview/1843282/the-vision-of-abbot-kinney-the-american-venice-canals-in-venice-ca/ Now my recommendation is plan on about an hour or two to stroll and gaze at the decorated homes in the canals. It is truly a great free event. Then after the fun of looking at the decor...

The vision of Abbot Kinney "The American Venice Canals" in Venice, CA. One of the best kept secrets in the greater Los Angeles area are the Venice Canals. I have known locals as well as many tourists who never even knew or they have never been to the Venice Canals in Los Angeles. Now I could understand if you never been to Venice Italy but as a local resident you are giving yourself a disservice by not visiting or knowing where the canals are.So with that said please let me give you a little history: The vision of Abbot Kinney "The American Venice Canals" materialized in the late 1890's to early 1900's in spite the opposition and the lack of belief by many in the Greater Los Angeles area.Abbot Kinney hired a landscape architect from Boston, MA. Shortly thereafter the Grand Canal stared ...

Not the everyday Labor Day Weekend at Venice Beach/Marina Del Rey, CA Not the everyday Labor Day Weekend at Venice Beach/Marina Del Rey, CA .  I am accustomed to the usually very crowded event. I remember hundreds of people circling, looking for parking spaces as they were trying to avoid paying a fee for parking.  This year I did not see that.  So I decided to take a stroll and walk to the beach to see what was going on? I found the beach vacant, hardly anyone out there. I understand the Weather Forecasters missed their predictions. They said there will be a strong marine layer with a cold front moving in. Needless to say it was 70+ degrees and sunshine. Nevertheless most people would not listen to the Weather and would go to the beach anyway. So I wonder where the people are.   Anywa...
