The Lake Tahoe Paddleboard Association (LTPA) was founded to “promote, provide, and support environmentally friendly human-power paddlesport activities” in the Basin. This not-for-profit organization has been around since 2009, and its premiere series, the Tahoe Cup, benefits non-motorized aquatic programs in Truckee-Tahoe. This year’s series of events take place in May, July, and September. If it’s Memorial Day Weekend, it’s time for the first of three major occasions: the Donner Lake Race! The first event takes place on Saturday, May 23, 2015. It’s open to all paddling craft; participants of all ability levels are welcome to race, from recreational to SUP Elites. Here are a few more details: While it’s recommended you register online, race-day registration begins at 8 a.m. Registrati...

It’s said the first fatbike (or fat bike), using Michelin fat tire prototypes, was ridden in the Sahara in 1986. A year or so later, mountain bikes were being customized by Simon Rakower in Fairbanks, Alaska. The SnowCat rim – much wider than conventional bicycle wheel rims – took hold and winter cycling gained a lot more traction! So wide tires, tires 4” or wider, are just the ticket for riding in unstable, soft terrain. Even the tire pressure is much less, 8-10 psi, for these behemoths. Where there’s snow, there’s fat biking activities… so there is fat biking in Truckee & Tahoe! Tahoe, along with several other similar areas, has its own Fat Tire Festival. The second weekend in September every year, you’ll find events centered on mountain bike races, single track rides, clinics, and mo...

We are cruising along in the Truckee-Tahoe Real Estate area.  Inventory levels are low .  I am constantly challenged to report the real estate statistics for all of the areas with such a wide range of offerings and prices.  Sales figures through our MLS system show Lake Tahoe  lakefronts to affordable housing.  When I look at the Truckee region of real estate I see 46 homes and condos sold since January 1, 2015, 41 properties in escrow and 142 available.    I would love to know what are interested in seeing for stats?  Suggestions are welcomed! Interest rates are low and new lender guidelines are coming out August 1, 2015, watch for an article about those changes next month! Photo credit

Our community has done it again! The town of Truckee, Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District, Truckee Tahoe Airport District, and generous private donations will ensure the Truckee Aquatic Center gets built. It’s anticipated that construction will begin in mid-April, lasting between nine months and a year. Megan and I are both avid swimmers and we’ve watched with great interest the processes, twists and turns, and now the final approval to get this done. The center is going to be built right next to the Recreation Center on Donner Pass Road. The decades-old pool behind Truckee High School will at long last be replaced. Features of the new aquatic center may even include a warm water pool, depending on more community donations. You can still help, by getting in touch with Steve Randa...

There’s a group of people you need to know about in the Truckee-North Lake Tahoe area: the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team (TNSAR). In their 38-year history, this dedicated collective of highly skilled volunteers have rescued over 500 lost, injured, or missing people. Without the expert help of the 150+ members of TNSAR, many of the people who went off-trail, or got injured while skiing, snowboarding, hiking, or biking, would have perished. Do you want to know more about this giving organization? You may not know their names; but we do. People like Larry Sevenson, who founded TNSAR, along other long-term members that include Doug Reid and Gerald Rockwell, have put their talents, skills, and lives on the line to rescue visitors, tourists, and residents alike. TNSAR’s members are div...

In one month alone, January 2015, The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team, all-volunteer team, rescued four people. Likely, two people would not have made it through the night if not for the rescue… It’s easy to lose one’s bearings or go off-trail on any of the ski, hiking, snowboarding or mountain biking paths in the Truckee/Tahoe area. Recently about 30 members of TNSAR were involved in a rescue of a part-time resident that set out for a little run and got lost.  The healthy man in his 60’s left his home near Dollar Point in the morning. His family didn’t think anything of his absence as the day progressed, assuming after his run that he went elsewhere for the day. At about 5 p.m., after he’d been out since 10 a.m., his family reporting him missing. The Deputy Sheriff, on interviewing...

If you love the adrenalin rush of ski cross and snowboard cross, the World Cup at Squaw Valley is where you’ll want to be between March 4 and 8, 2015. The International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski, or FIS) will, for the first time since 1969, bring the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup and FIS Snowboard World Cup to us. As there will only be two more events following this World Cup, this is an important case of timing for competitors. Squaw Valley isn’t new to hosting major events, and much of that has to do with its structure. For example, it has hosted the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships, and the U.S. Freestyle Championships. At this year’s World Cup event, seven-time X Games champion Nate Holland will be competing, as will several other global stars including Lindsey (...

It’s that time of year when Tahoe and Truckee homeowners' mailboxes are stuffed with W-2’s, 1099’s and 1098’s, and accountants across America are hunkering down for long hours of number-crunching. With Income Tax Season officially upon us, there’s no better opportunity as a homeowner to see if you are taking advantage of lightening your tax burden by every cent that Uncle Sam will allow. My associate, Valerie Brinker, compiled a list of tax deductions and credits that you may be able to take advantage of for 2014 along with IRS.gov links:     1.  Mortgage Interest on Primary or Second Home   http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p936.pdf 2.    Primary Mortgage Insurance (PMI)  http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p936.pdf (page 8)...

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is to choose and cut a live Christmas tree. Christmas trees near Truckee and North Tahoe can be found at farms or in the forest. A beautiful winter drive, a nice hike to choose the perfect tree, some quick work with the saw and some cord and you're bringing back the most beautiful tree ever...plus you have a great story to tell! Wrap up your glorious afternoon with a stop for hot cocoa and a treat. Every member of the family will be a fan of this old tradition! Want to trek into the forest? You'll need a permit from the US Forest Service. They're limited, so apply for yours early, check the website for stations and phone numbers. Fines are steep for taking a tree without a permit, so please follow the rules. The Rangers can also give good advice...

It features an open floor plan with a large great room, floor to ceiling stone fireplace, and high vaulted knotty pine ceilings that make coming home so special and welcoming. The long windows on either side of the fireplace provide a wonderful show during thunder and snow storms.  But beware, stretching out on a sofa to read usually ends up with a nap! There is a multipurpose loft with fireplace & built-in desk and shelves, too, for games or homework.  The kitchen layo...
