Embarcadero (San Francisco, CA)

"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana"I hadn't heard this until last week, but apparently it is a saying often used as an example of a "garden path sentence"  as an example of a double entendre.Whatever the origin, I chuckled, and thought of this large arrow sculpture named Cupid's Span which adorns the Embarcadero in San Francisco. After attending a program at the new Transit Center, we decided to walk home via the beautiful waterfront and enjoy the sculpture as well as Embarcadero itself.Yesterday was a delightful day in The City, sunny mild temperatures, a relief from the soaring heat inland. People were out in droves, enjoying a lazy Saturday afternoon, basking in the sun. When you live in San Francisco, it's easy to enjoy the whims of the day.

Is it OK for Big Kids (aka adults) to take time to play? When you live in San Francisco the answer is a resounding YES!Thursday evenings are adult night at the Exploratorium, one of the premier hands-on science museums in the country, in operation since 1969. Regular sessions close at 5:00 PM. At 6:00 PM the doors re-open for guests ages 18 and older. The atmosphere is fun; bars are set up (and well-patronized I must say) and the crowd is happy and chatty. San Francisco is full of young adults, and the average age seems to be the under 35 crowd. However, we "mature" folk have a great time too, and the social interaction (many of the exhibits foster team work) with others of different ages, different backgrounds, and different interests is a lot of fun.Last night my husband and I walked ...

The Exploratorium is San Francisco's hands-on science museum. The first of its kind in the country, it has been wowing residents and visitors alike since 1969.The expanded location at Pier 15 along the Embarcadero allows for more displays than ever, including the visiting exhibition of Theo Jansen's dream machines, the Strandbeest, now through September 5.  Come take one of the smaller strandbeests for a walk! Open daily in June, July and August, there is one evening each week set aside for adults 18 and older - Thursdays, from 6:00 - 10:00 PM. This is a great idea for a date night, for a work group to enjoy, or any adult wishing smaller crowds. For hours, directions, parking, and cost, check out the official web site at:www.exploratorium.edu/visit

Super Bowl 50 is just around the corner, and The City That Knows How has prepared for the giant party that San Francisco will be for the next couple of weeks. The game itself will be played at the 49er's new stadium in Santa Clara, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, but week-long activities are planned in San Francisco, which is expecting over 1,000,000 visitors."It's [San Francisco] going to be crowded. There is going to be traffic, and there are going to be streets closed," warns Charlotte Shultz, the city's Chief of Protocol. "We're a city that knows how to either take that in stride or complain about it."Since complaining only hurts the complainer my advice: Embrace it! Participate! Have fun!Justin Herman Plaza and a good part of the Embarcadero will become Super Bowl City, a hub f...

This morning I woke to a chilly 47 degrees in San Francisco - not cold to many around the country, but definitely a change from the balmy 60s and 70s we enjoyed just a couple of days ago, when we strolled along San Francisco's Embarcadero wearing short-sleeved T-shirts! One of the first things we spotted as we approached The Exploratorium, the hands-on science museum loved by young and not-so-young alike was this eye-catching new exhibit. Right outside the museum, to be enjoyed by all passers-by. This little video clip shows just how much fun was had; impossible to walk by and not be curious. And that's what The Exploratorium is all about - stimulating our minds, piqueing our interest, and then explaning what's going on.   Come explore the City, take advantage of all it has to offer. If...

The days after Thanksgiving seem to call for getting out for exercise, and living in San Francisco makes that easy to do. After a leisurely breakfast on Friday morning, we set out across the shoulder of Nob Hill, down through Chinatown, across North Beach to the former Barbary Coast area and then to our destination, The Exploratorium. We weren't here for the museum, but to buy a couple of gift cards. (Love shopping local!) Outside the museum were several exhibits which weren't there a month ago - you can count on finding something fresh and new to stimulate the mind. Today, this demonstration how clouds are formed was enjoyable to watch. When you live in San Francisco, you'll never be bored, unless that's your choice!
