As a sponsor I was disappointed that Marine Corps Air Station Miramar announced Thursday morning that the Miramar Air Show scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due the government shutdown. A statement released by MCAS Miramar Commanding Officer Col. John P. Farnam said that although steps have been taken since the restrictions of sequestration began earlier this year to ensure the base would be able to host the event, direction leading to the cancellation was given early Thursday. "This morning we received guidance from the Deputy Secretary of Defense that mandates non-excepted activities, including outreach events, are not authorized under the current shutdown guidelines," Farnam wrote. "We want to thank the San Diego community for their tremendous support over the past few mon...

In the year 2525....  Google has announced that there are robotic cars moseying down the streets in our neighborhoods. I wonder what took them so long. The United States has been flying robotic planes for many years now, such as this one: That airplane is a Global Hawk that was on display at the MCAS Miramar Air Show last weekend. I have no idea who the people are. LOL The Global Hawk was originally built as a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). It is now known as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Personally, I like Remotely Piloted Aircraft better. They are used by both the Navy and the Air Force; they fly high and take cool pictures, like this one: As rapidly as technology is moving, I don't think we're going to have to wait until the year 2525.... ♪♫♫♫♪ If you're looking for a great re...

The 2010 MCAS Miramar Air Show:The Blue Angels!  The highlight of the 2010 MCAS Miramar Air Show was the United States Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, more popularly known as the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels first performed in 1946 and are currently the oldest aerobatic flight team. They fly the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, which they have been flying since 1986. The F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic aircraft capable of flying at 1,190 miles per hour (Mach 1.8), slightly faster than my Toyota Camry. The 2010 MCAS Miramar Air Show:If the planes go too fast....  When you are at an air show, it's easy to get pictures of the planes far away. They seem to be just barely moving. Unfortunately, without something like a 1000mm lens, you won't see the airplane. Those are the United States Navy's Blue Angels, and they were a couple of miles away taken with a 300mm lens. They are cruising at about 400 miles an hour. If you try to get a picture of a plane zooming by in front of you at 400 miles an hour, this might be what your picture looks like, even if you're leading the plane: The way to prevent that problem is to switch to sports mode.
