Redondo Beach was the home of California´s first modern surfer. In 1907, Henry Huntington brought the ancient art of Hawaiian surfing to the California coast. He owned most of the properties in Redondo Beach and was eager to sell them to visiting Angelenos looking for a break from the heat of the greater Los Angeles basin. Huntington had seen Hawaiian beach boys surfing and decided to hire one of them; a young Hawaiian-English athlete named George Freeth to demonstrate the art of surfing for the entertainment of Redondo Beach visitors.George Freeth   George wanted to revive the art of surfing that he had seen depicted in old Polynesian paintings but found it difficult and had little success using the typical 16-foot hardwood boards.                                                                         History of King Harbor   In September 1938, a bond issue was passed that called for construction of a 1,485-foot breakwater north of the Redondo Beach pleasure pier to construct a boat harbor with the assistance of the Works Progress Administration (WPA).   The proposed breakwater was begun in 1939 but only partially finished. The short breakwater changed the flow of the current along the shoreline resulting in extensive beach erosion and the destruction of shoreline homes. The 120-by-60 foot Ice Skating rink that was built at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach will have it's Grand Opening tomorrow at 4pm. The address is 200 Portofino Way and will be open until 9:30 pm. It will cost $14 for adults and $12 for children for 1 1/2 hours, rental skates included. Yes, it's true!  We have ice skating at the beach now - Redondo Beach - Seaside Lagoon of all places!  How cool - outdoor ice skating rink right next to the ocean - this is so exciting.  This could rival Central Park's Ice Skating Rink.  The Seaside Lagoon, located in the heart of Redondo Beach King Harbor at 200 Portofino Way, will be the site of the South Bay's first outdoor ice skating experience, Seaside Ice, with skating available November 18, 2008 through January 11, 2009, from 11:00a.m. - 9:30p.m. weekdays and from 10:00a.m. - 10:00p.m. weekends.
