Whisketown is located on the southeastern edge of the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion, which has been designated as a World Heritate Site, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and an area of Global Botanical Significance by the World Conservation Union. The Klamath Mountains are one of the richest temperate coniferous forest regions of the world and provide valuable habitat. Whiskeytown host three species of flowers that are endemic to the Klamath range, Canyon Creek Stonecrop, Snow Mountain Beardtongue and Shasta County Arnica and one species of grass this found only in Whiskeytown and nowhere else in the world. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is part of the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The Visitor Center is located on Highway 299 and Kennedy Memorial Drive. The Visitor Center is open daily during the summer from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. All permits and passes are available there. A large selection of books and postcards are also available. Whiskeytown Dam was dedicated in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. Whiskeytown Lake was created as part of the Central Valley Project for the purposes of flood control, irrigation and power generation. We took our obligatory trip to Whiskeytown Lake this last Sunday. Every Sunday that we don't do an Open House, which is seldom, we promise our dog Ginger that we will go to the Lake. She's learning to swim and I like to watch the boats come and go and all the going's on around getting that boat in the water and getting it out. People are generally nice and help each other. You seldom see anyone be mean or disrespectful. This day was no exception. While there were lots of boats (more than I remember) everyone was courteous and helpful to each other. The catamarans and sailboats are always my favorites. Connection to wind, water and sailing application....good stuff! Catamaran 2 is heading out for a sail.
