We often receive questions about places to board horses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  The Portuguese Bend Riding Club in Rancho Palos Verdes is always on my list of suggested stables.Josh and I were previewing new listings in the gated neighborhood recently and took the opportunity to feature the equestrian amenities in this short video clip. The entrance to the gated neighborhood is off Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.  The landscape is majestic with rolling hills and ocean vistas. There are riding and exercise rings as well as miles of trails throughout the neighborhood.  If you're searching for a beautiful area to both board and ride your horse, the Portuguese Bend neighborhood is an excellent choice. Yes, the Pacific Ocean is across the street from the Portug...

This public beach in Rancho Palos Verdes is accessible from Trump National Golf Course.  It is a hike down the cliff to reach the sand, but it is one of my favorite places to walk on the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula.  It's also a great workout when you climb the switchback trail up the cliff on your return. The public beach area is located adjacent to the private Portuguese Bend Beach off Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes.  There is a lifeguard station but I have been there many times when no lifeguard was present.  It is not a popular beach for swimming.  Surfers do frequent this beach but beware of the rocks both in and out of the water. Low tide is a wonderful time to stroll along the water's edge and view tide pools and the sea creatures. I've seen some beautiful ...

The Vanderlip Cottage   Immediately after purchasing the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1916, Frank Vanderlip engaged a study to compile weather information about the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula.  From the data from that study, Vanderlip determined that the most consistent mild, sunny and fog free weather was in the Portuguese Bend area of the Peninsula. Vanderlip chose this area for the Vanderlip’s summer home, which was constructed in 1916 as the first residence on the Palos Verdes Peninsula other than a couple of ranch houses that no longer exist. The home was copied from their vacation house in Scrub Oak, New York. The Cottage is located at 99 Vanderlip Dr., and although over 3,800 sq. ft. with 4 bedrooms and 4 baths, was initially called the "Old Ra...

Harden House for Sale An historical estate in Rancho Palos Verdes known as "the Harden House" is currently on the market for sale for approx. $5 million. Across the street from the Portuguese Bend Gatehouse and the entrance to the Portuguese Bend community, the Harden House sits behind another beautiful Gatehouse. The gatehouse was an exact duplicate of a gate house architects employed by Frank Vanderlip photographed in Italy. Frank Vanderlip purchased the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1913. This house was built by Vanderlip's beloved sister Ruth and her husband Eddie Harden, a business partner of Vanderlip, in the late 1920's. Vanderlip had given Ruth the 48 acres of coastal land on the ocean side of Palos Verdes Dirve South. They ...

THE WAYFARERS CHAPEL   One of the most notable landmarks in Rancho Palos Verdes is the Wayfarers' Chapel located near Portuguese Bend off of Palos Verdes Drive South. This "Glass Church" was built by the Churches of the New Jerusalem in 1951 as a national monument to Emanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth-century mystic. The construction was made possible by Mrs. Narcissa Vanderlip, who donated the site, and was designed by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyed Wright. Peninsula resident and Swedenborgian Church member Elizabeth Sewall Schellenberg first envisioned building such a chapel in the 1920s as a tribute to the church’s founder, eighteenth-century theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. Mrs. Schellenberg dreamed of a little chapel on a hillside above the Pacific ...
