Getting to know The Presidio in San Francisco is a year-round treat, but never more so than in summer. My top 5 summertime activities here include: Learn some of the history. The Officer's club, open free of charge 6 days a week (closed Monday) has a wonderful small museum offering a glimpse of native American life in the area, early Spanish and Mexican life here, and when the Presidio was an active US Army post. You'll find art exhibits on the gallery walls, and a long-running exhibit, "Exclusion" detailing the Presidio's role in the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Sit for a while in Moraga Hall, the ballroom when the Officer's club was here, now enjoyed as quiet space where one can read, relax, do some office work. Take a hike. There's nothing quite like explorin...

Whether you live in San Francisco or are visiting here from elsewhere in the world, getting to know The Presidio is a not-to-be-missed adventure. Established in 1776 as a military garrison it was deemed no longer needed by the US Army in 1994, given to the National Park Service, and then to the Presidio Trust to manage, which they have done and continue to do in a exemplary manner as you can read in this recap of the history of the Presidio Trust. Here you'll find great diversity in the 1,500 acre parkland. Wander the hiking trails and pathways with gorgeous views of the bay and the Pacific Ocean, find the four art installations of Andy Goldsworthy scattered in various spots, stroll through the immaculately groomed gardens of the Letterman Center, home of Lucasfilms and smile at delightf...

Memorial Day weekend, and time once again to share this poignant poem which is engraved on a plaque above the National Cemetery in San Francisco's Presidio:The Young Dead Soldiers, by Archibald MacLeish The young dead soldiers to not speak. Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:who has not heard them? They have a silence that speaks for them at nightand when the clock counts. They say: We were young. We have died.Remember us. They say: We have done what we couldbut until it is finished it is not done. They say: We have given our lives but until it is finishedno one can know what our lives gave. They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours, they will mean what you make them. They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were forpeace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot sa...

April 15 -- tax day! Even though this year income tax returns don't need to be postmarked today, just hearing the word, "April 15" can make the blood pressure rise. Add to that the extremely fast-moving real estate markets we're experiencing in many parts of the county, and stress can quickly reach stratospheric levels. At times like these the best antidote I have is visiting some of my favorite calming spots. Many of these are in the Presidio of San Francisco, a 30-minute walk from my home, or an even shorter drive. The trail pictured above is one of my favorites--I simply can't help smiling as I walk up or down it. Often I'm alone; sometimes pre-school children are enjoying an outing; happy dogs can be seen playing here, grooving on all the sticks available. On one particular day latel...

Happiness is.....sharing an outing with always-happy Tanner who loves a good adventure in our beautiful city and makes friends wherever he goes. With Tanner in tow one can count on striking up conversations with others. Seeing what appeals to Tanner opens my eyes a bit wider and helps me relish the moment.Rachael Kendall - thanks for letting Tanner adventure with me. I wonder what he and I will see today? This post is submitted to Dick Greenberg's Photo Contest,  Real Life, Animal category.

Some days one just needs an extra dose of beauty to put the world right again, at least ones own little world. The Presidio in San Francisco is a source of beauty, one I never tire of visiting. Sometimes solitude is what I need, just a place to sit and breathe can works wonders; other times laughing and chatting with friends as we climb and descend staircases fills my heart.SWhether it is waves crashing energetically onto the beach and rocks, or a quiet, little-used trail in the woods, I hope you find your own special spots that fit you and your needs perfectly.

The Walt Disney Family Museum is an American museum that features the life and legacy of Walt Disney. The museum is located in The Presidio of San Francisco, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco. This was my first time visiting a museum dedicated only to Walk Disney and wow! This was very eye opening and shined light into this thought process, along with the adversity Mr. Disney faced during journey. So many great lessons to take from learning his stories. He shared at some point he learned to stop caring what other people thought and just got on with his creations and how he brought life to them. He devised a team of people whom were the best of the best and even started his own Disney Art school. The first photo is an example in how his "mind map" function...

"We opened the gates to all the world and said: 'Let all men who want to be free come to us and they will be welcome.'  " ... Woodrow WilsonEtched in stone on the top of the wall at Immigrant Point in San Francisco's Presidio, you'll find this quote of Woodrow Wilson's. Re-affirming our country's dedication to freedom, this statement was part of Wilson's Address at Independence Hall on July 4, 1914 on "The Meaning of Liberty." Early morning, late afternoon, at sunset - each time of day casts it's spell. Here you'll see bicyclists, motorists, hikers and trail runner; tourists and residents, school groups camping at nearby Rob Hill Campground.Immigrant Point speaks to many. The view of the entrance to the Golden Gate is world-class; the setting gorgeous. It is a special place, one of my t...

Merry Christmas to my Active Rain family of friends. It sure was tempting to take more pictures today of some fabulous mansions in Presidio Heights and Pacific Heights with their gleaming Christmas decorations! But, I promised no more this year. So---instead, I'm sharing a couple of pictures I took on Gene and my annual Christmas Day hike. When we lived in San Carlos for all those years, we would hike at Edgewood County Park every Christmas. Since moving to San Francisco, our annual hike is about 7 miles, from our house, across the Presidio to Immigrant Point overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Marin County hills, just outside the Golden Gate. This year our late-afternoon hike took place on a crystal clear, cold day, perfect for walking. As we returned, we heard owls hooting close by -...

Memorial Day in San Francisco Memorial Day - this holiday weekend will find many of us taking the first camping trip of the summer, joining friends and family on picnics, heading to concerts, street fairs, etc. My hike on Monday likely will take me through The Presidio in San Francisco, which is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area It is also is home to one of our national cemeteries. San Francisco is a delightful city in which to walk, and on Veterans' Day, after 3 days of NAR conference meetings, 3 of us got together to clear our minds and get some exercise. While our numbers were small, the sharing of ideas, the laughter, the exercise wasn't. Chris Hansen, Ann Wilkins and I had an enjoyable afternoon. We walked a very scenic 5-mile loop, starting at the Marina Green, then past the gorgeous Palace of Fine Arts, followed by our LONG, STEEP staircase up Lyon Street. (Can you believe that many people train on these stairs, running up and down, doing crunches and weight lifting at the top?) From there we entered the Presidio, and took some "almost trails" to more clearly defined ones to Julius Kahn playground and a well-earned water break. On we went, above El Polin Sp...

So much for which to be thankful -- family and friends, food, a warm house. Today, Thanksgiving Day, we'll celebrate all of that, and be ever so grateful. Those thoughts were running through my mind yesterday afternoon as I wrapped up my work day early. Also going through my mind was how thankful I am to be living here in San Francisco, with my husband -- and how much I needed to step away from my computer and get some exercise. So, when my husband moved his car out of the garage to free up his spot for our granddaughter's use (a truly great guy, don't you think?), I asked him to drop me off at Lyon Street so I could run in the Presidio.Imagine -- this is November, and I'm out in T-shirt and yoga pants, enjoying the quietness of the trails as I jogged past Lover's Lane, Julius Kahn play...

A few months ago I sent a letter to a childhood friend, Carol Moran Thorton, who now lives an hour north of San Francisco.  Over dinner at the  Spinnaker Restaurant in Sausalito, CA we determined that we had not seen each other for 43 years, but we spent 4+ hours trying to catch up.  Fortunately our husbands found things in common because I think we pretty much ignored them most of the evening. As kids growing up in Oil City, PA our nickname was the "Pearl Avenue Magpies"  because magpies chatter a lot.  I guess we haven't lost our touch.   Carol & her husband, Ken, agreed to pick us up at the cruise terminal and were our tour guides for several hours before taking us over the Golden Gate Bridge.  Carol's choice of restaurants could not have been better as  the Spinnaker Restaurant was ...
