Home safety begins with you – Photo       There are many things that we can all do to make our homes safe for those that live in and visit with us. For example: proper storage of hazardous materials, safe walkways, and working locksets. It should go without saying that shooting guns indoors, including a bb gun, is not safe. When called to look at drainage pipe leak in a bathroom, I notice a hand drawn bull’s eye on the wall. As I got closer to the target, I couldn’t believe what I saw – bb’s stuck in the drywall. This was inside the building! I’m sure the instructions mentioned this in the safe operations manual, but heck, who reads those anyway. One day someone may have to get hurt for a lesson to be learned. Let’s hope not!       View Larger Map

The Life of Caulking May Be Misleading, Check it Regularly   There are many different types of caulking for many different applications. Using the correct product for your project is very important for favorable results. But just how long does the caulking last.   Usually not as long as they claim; you can help achieve longer lasting caulk life by doing a few things in the beginning. Read and follow the instructions on the product. It is important that the surface is properly prepared, a clean dry surface has a better rate of success than just applying the product over the surface Use the proper caulking. The choices may seem endless, but be sure that the description matches your project. You don’t want to use an interior caulk for the outside of your home. Extreme conditions can affect...

Sagging Roof Will Not Get Better On Its Own – Photo         I was driving through this neighborhood in Placerville, and happened to see this horse building that looks like it is in need of repair. The roof has sagged and will get progressively worse. It would seem to be an easy repair at this point.

Sunday Morning Sunrise Met With Some Early Clouds         There is a chance of rain tomorrow, and the early clouds seem to be settling in. It has been a relatively dry year in El Dorado County; a little rain would be good. In the meantime, I think I will just enjoy the view.

Not Everyone Can Patch A Hole In The Wall     There is real satisfaction in patching a hole in the hole and making it disappear from sight. A patch that is done right can not be detected except by looking very closely at the details up close.   This patch does not meet that ideal, you can see that it was patched.

She sure can get cozy on the couch – Photo   I don’t know how they do it, but cats seem to have a knack for getting comfortable. There is something about some comfy blankets and pillows that just draw the furry ones to rest peacefully. Maybe we can learn something from the cats.  J

Sometimes you have to talk to the client as if he were a child.   I coached basketball for many years, I learned a lot about teaching working with those young players. No matter what the age of my players, I found that they would respond best if I were to explain what we were going to be doing in a way that they could understand. Just saying what I wanted was never enough, they needed to comprehend it. I find that this comes in handy as a general contractor in Sacramento too. Many of the average homeowners and apartment managers do not understand why a problem occurs, or how something needs to be corrected. They just want it fixed. By explaining the how and why of the trade can go a long way in gaining the trust of the customer. If they can comprehend what needs to be done they have a...

The smoke from the surrounding fires in California has delayed the sunrise a little bit this morning. Though the air has cleared temporarily in Placerville, a shift can change the air quality rather quickly. Enjoying the clear air while it lasts, and praying for those that are battling the fires for us!

Morning Colors over the Sierra Foothills – Photo   Every morning is a bit unique as you face the sunrise over the Sierra Mountains. Sometimes the skies are clear, other times the cloud cover is too great to see the light. Most days are somewhere in between; which paints a unique palette of colors for all to see.

FAQ – Will you haul everything away?   Yes, we always haul away all of our construction debris.   There are many reasons for getting all that old building materials off site quickly. Safety – Many accidents involve stepping on nails or bumping into piles of debris. Getting the pile into a trailer and to the landfill is best. Make room – Things can get crowded with stuff lying around. Odor – Water damaged building materials has an odor that is best loaded and removed. Create an atmosphere of rebuilding – It is amazing how much better a job site looks when things are beyond the demolition stage and the rebuilding stage starts.   In addition, many times we can throw in some of those things that you have wanted to get rid of for years. If we have some room in the trailer and going to the la...

I just heard that because of the limited rain fall and the resulting dry season, the bears are moving to lower elevations in the Sierra Foothills. The bear contacts with humans have tripled this year because of the dry weather. The bears are expected to reach as low as 1,000 feet of elevation. This would include cities like Placerville and Auburn. I live at about 1,300 feet; this could be scary.

Something About a Sunset to Close the Day     There is something about seeing the sun dip behind the horizon. It makes me reflect on the day; what was done right and what could be done better the next time. And then we get to watch the sun rise and do it all over again. J

Great day to just relax in the shade   As I walked out to do some chores this morning, I couldn’t help but notice a deer resting on the lawn. It kind of set the tone for the day; just take it easy for the day.   We see a lot of animals in our neighborhood and they all tend to look similar to each other. This one is special though. She has been coming around our home for about 5 years now on a regular basis.     How do I know this? Well ever since she was a new born, her right ear tip looks as if it has been bitten. I don’t know what have happened, or if she was just born that way, it’s just always been like that.

Casting Shadows at Sunset.   I came across this little guy while unloading my truck at the end of the day. He was on top of the garbage can as I walked by. This praying mantis was no larger than an inch but sure did cast a quite a shadow as the sun set.

I was able to catch the sun peeking through the trees a little earlier, I liked the pattern of the sun shining through. Thought I could enhance it a little by adjusting the colors. I like the deep blue in evening hour shots. How about you?     Do you like the blue?
