Palm Desert, CA Real Estate News

By Nancy Hankin
(RE/MAX Real Estate Consultants)
Looking for the latest "up-to-date" real  estate news or mortgage rates? Look no further. I have the latest  Real Estate News and Mortgage Information  at your fingertips! Real Estate has been a pretty "hot" topic for the past 10 years. We've seen the market soar to new heights in 2005, then begin to steadily fall from 2006 until 2010. Although some markets are experiencing price decreases, in many areas it appears we've "hit the bottom." Another area which has helped the economy recover, has been  very low, and attractive, interest rates.  They are still under 5%. This has been a big help to many who would not normally qualify, if rates had been higher.  I can still remember buying my first home in 1970. At that time rates were 8%, and we felt we were getting a great rate. When was the...

Americas Favorite Big top Circus is in Palm Desert.  Tonight is the opening night and it has been so much fun to see the kids standing around watching the big tent go up.  Circus Vargas will be in town through the  weekend at the West field Mall Parking Lot The theater-style tent seats 1,500 people comfortably.. The tent consists of 90,000 square feet of fabric and is supported by 500 individually placed stakes and over four miles of rope and cable weighing over 17 tons. It is amazing even as an adult to see the big tent and work that goes into setting it up. Just driving by this morning brought back memories of going to the circus as a child.  The clowns, the cotton candy and the people flying through the air.  Amazing how quickly the circus can bring you right back to the innocence of...

The Living Desert's annual fall plant sale takes place this weekend so Kirk and I headed over there yesterday after the eventful morning on El Paseo. We'd breakfasted at the newly-opened Italian-themed cafe, Il Sogno, where we spied a favorite artist in town from Flagstaff. Connie Townsend, an artist who specializes in animal portraits, had just delivered new canvases to her desert gallery, The Christopher Morgan Gallery, a few doors up the boulevard. Contentedly stuffed with quiche and coffee and glowing from the unexpected artist rendez-vous, Kirk and I continued our memorable outing at The Living Desert, located just a few blocks north of El Paseo. The wildlife and botanical park, founded in 1970 by Karen Sausman, straddles both Palm Desert and Indian Wells and features the flora and...

Picture this. I'm happily tucking into a Saturday breakfast repast of savory Quiche Lorraine and French-press coffee at brand-new cafe, Il Sogno, overlooking Palm Desert's scenic boulevard El Paseo when I spy a familiar face approach the outside bistro tables. "Surely that can't be Connie Townsend," I wonder aloud to Kirk. When I see the curly-haired woman snapping close-up photos of a bandana-wearing pooch, I realize it has to be a favorite artist who specializes in canine portraits. Connie spies me staring at her through the plate-glass window and mouths, "Mary?" Although we've met only once early last year at a gallery event on this same boulevard—when I was instantly smitten with her whimsical, colorful acrylics of endearing dogs and cats—we've gotten to be friends via email and ani...

Palm Desert is always in the vanguard artistically and architecturally here in the Coachella Valley. It was the first to commission signs—themed using giant slabs of flagstone—announcing various entry points of the city. The other cities quickly followed suite and the Valley is now replete with distinctive artwork demarcating each town's boundaries. The city's homage to art is quickly apparent, with eye-catching sculpture adorning El Paseo and the major boulevards. Last week I highlighted some of the revolving artwork now gracing the sidewalks and meridians of the desert's Rodeo Drive.   The city recently unveiled its new Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, wonderfully ensconced on a huge lot at the corner of Hwy 111 and Monterey, across from the Westfield Shopping Center. The forme...

Up at 5, on the trail at 6 a.m.! Kirk marvels at my new-found ability to rise and shine. Well, the first part anyway. This marks my third hike within four days. How on earth did I morph into this avid hiker? This morning the Energizer Bunny, aka Sue Cook—a fellow Windermere agent—and I tackle a 3-hour portion of the Art Smith Trail in the foothills of south Palm Desert. The trailhead commences across from the Santa Rosa Mountains' Visitor's Center and right before Hwy 74—the Palms to Pines route—commences its serpentine rise over the mountain pass. This trail is closed to hikers during the spring lambing season of the beseiged band of local bighorns and I've always wanted to try it. The strenuous trail is 16 miles long and serves as the major link between the Palm Desert portion of the ...

El Paseo in Palm Desert, the desert's version of Rodeo Drive, features an ever-changing array of outdoor artwork. After this morning's early-morning hike along the Hopalong Cassidy Trail above Palm Desert, Marianne and I sipped coffee on the beautiful boulevard and then window-shopped the boutiques and galleries. I snapped the following sculptures along the way. Tonight also happens to be El Paseo Art Walk, an in-season, Open House of the street's plentiful art galleries held the first Thursday of each month.  From 5 to 9 p.m. all the galleries—and many of the boutiques—remain open, serving up wine, hors d'oeuvres and even music. Art, wine-in-hand, balmy weather—what more could you ask for?
