Diane and I have been going to the Festival of Books for the past 24+ years. If memory serves me correctly, we only missed the first two... Now with that said this year we did not get a new coffee mug. Usually, we get one every year commemorating our visit to the Festival of Books. This year was a total disappointment.The marketing was too vague and too discouraging. In the old days if you wanted to see an author you did not have to pay to enter. This year the message was mistakenly focused on, that you cannot get to see a panel or an author unless you pay for a ticket. Really??? False messaging. Sadly, many bought into this message including us.I told Diane it was just poor English and not clear messaging... we disagreed... on a side note I was right.So, with that said, let me tell you...

The State of California and Los Angeles County took another big hit today when the Los Angeles Board of Education voted to lay off as many as 5400 teachers and support personnel for the upcoming school year.  This is another blow to the educational system in the LA area.  LAUSD employees protested outside the meeting today, to no avail.  LAUSD is the second largest school system in the United States.  There is a $596 million budget shortage for the next school year.  One ray of hope from the day...  the board voted to save the jobs of over 1900 elementary school teachers using stimulus funds from the government. Here is the "before" picture.                     As you can see, there are piles of papers yelling "Pay attention to me" and "Look at all the work you have to do before you can relax". In August 2008 I blogged about Candy Spelling and her $150 Million Mansion ("The Manor") in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles. Now that Mrs. Spelling has purchased a $47 Million, 16,000 sq ft penthouse in Century City, she is selling the home she lived in with her late husband, Aaron Spelling. It was interesting to read how she chose a Realtor to list her property .... Candy Spelling told The Associated Press that "she let her dog Madison, a soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, help pick out the best real estate agent for the task. This is a question that many people have asked me over the past year, and one posted over and over in many of the web forums I visit. In my case, we are simply cutting out all of the luxuries like: eating out, traveling, buying impulse items, and any other expense that are just not needed. It has been tough on my wife and kids, but we have gone as far as making it a fun game to find ways to be frugal. We are back to the old fashion 7:00 dinner at home, and at the table!
