Benefits of Eating and Drinking Oranges Daily One of my clients gave me two bags of oranges this week so I have been juicing every morning. I love fresh squeezed orange juice and will sometimes cut one up and take one as a morning snack.   USA is the #2 grower of oranges in the world (#1 is Brazil). The price is usually reasonable unless there is a major freeze and most every store nationwide stocks oranges.   So why eat or drink orange juice/fruit in the morning?  The reason is in your nose. The aroma of citrus produces a cognitive effect on those exposed to it. It's energizing, invigorating and refreshing. In effect, the scent of oranges helps wake you up. Since about 90 percent of what people perceive as taste is produced by smell, orange juice becomes a sort of pep pill for the se...

Kristin & the Band of Realtors Conquer the Evil Kingdom of Foreclosure       Life was good in LomaBlue Land in 2013 and people were happy. Kristin was a Realtor in this area along with many other Realtors and all helped buyers and sellers. The community was covered with orange groves and everyone loved to eat oranges. Yes, LomaBlue Land was a very happy and safe place.               Then an evil queen moved into the area and built the "Kingdom of Foreclosure". She put a spell over the land; HOMEOWNERS didn’t want to sell their homes and BUYERS only wanted only to RENT.         The Queen had another rule; No one was allowed to eat oranges and all the groves were destroyed plus none of the grocery stores could have any for sale. It was a death sentence to anyone found with an orange!   ...

Neither Rain, nor Snow nor Sleet Could Stop Mail Delivery but EMAIL Has         Neither rain, nor snow nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers from their appointed rounds!! This is the unofficial postman motto we have all known for many years. But with the excess use of “Email, Scanners and Fax Machines” the delivery of the mail has reduced drastically.  Companies like FedEx and UPS have also caused a major reduction of mail and packages being handled through the USPS.   On August 5, 2013, the U.S. Postal Service announced it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays in attempt to save the troubled federal agency $2 billion a year. It will continue to deliver packages six days a week, a service that has seen a 14 percent increase since 2010.   E-mail and other electronic commun...

Get Healthy in the Rain-The First 30 Days     I always think the first part of a “diet” or “eating lifestyle change” (whatever you call it) is the hardest…especially the first 7 days. So this morning was my first day of the 60 day challenge.       These are my challenges to become healthier© Sleep more hours per night Cut out most sugar in my diet Stop eating the junk food Eat more healthy foods; fruits, grains, vegetables, nuts Drink more water and less diet soda Exercise daily; walking, running and treadmill No snacks after 8:00 p.m. Eat Breakfast every morning Weigh and measure myself this morning, in 30 days, and 60 days. KEEP A JOURNAL….This keeps me accountable.   I am totally concerned with heart disease and cancer. These diseases don’t run in my family but I know what I am suppo...

City of Loma Linda is Going Green Replacing Street Lights with LED Bulbs     In the past year, the city has been actively replacing the 1200 street lights sodium bulbs with the newer LED lights which use 40% less energy. Sodium lights cost approximately $300 and the new LED lights cost over $650 each. Sodium bulbs last 4-6 years and the LED bulbs last approximately 10-20 years. The LED lights are much brighter too which is always a plus for public safety.       Most of the money used to purchase the new bulbs was from the stimulus funds and the city put in the additional monies needed. Southern California Edison is giving rebates to the city for upgrading the lighting.   The city of Loma Linda expects to save $125,000 a year on its electricity bill and, with the cost of using employee...

US Postage Rates Increasing on January 27, 2013   Stock up on the ‘Forever Stamps’ in the next couple of days as next Monday postage is going up. I am sure most of you are aware of the Forever stamps; they are the ones that are good forever no matter what the postage rates increase to. Currently to mail a regular letter (1 oz) is 45 cents but will be going up to 46 cents to help defray mailing costs by the USPS.       The USPS is offering a new stamp ‘First Class Mail Forever Global Stamp’ for Mailing any 1oz letter to any country in the world for $1.10. I think this is a great idea because many people will not have to stand in the long lines to mail a letter anywhere in the world. Just add one of these new stamps to your envelope and drop it in the box.           Many stores offer ro...

Cherry Pie……………Good to the Last bite.   At Thanksgiving, we couldn’t agree on pie so at the end of the day, my husband ran to the store and bought a pumpkin and an apple. He hates pumpkin and I do not care for apple but the day came to a nice end with pie. Here was the article I wrote about it: We Couldn't Agree on Pie.     But yesterday, all I could think about was “Cherry Pie” so here it is. My kids and husband do not like cherry so I guess I should just get one today instead. I can bet they will be eating it from the refrigerator even though they say they hate cherry pie.   We have 3 days left so who knows what kind of pies we will end up with on Christmas. I may just have to go buy the pies myself! ENJOY the Song from the 50's.     California is a dream come true state no matter w...

Check Out Google's Home Page today Commemorating the Grimm’s Brothers Be sure to stop by Google’s homepage today Thursday December 20, 2012 and you'll enjoy a scrollable comic strip telling the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The doodle celebrates the 200th anniversary of "Grimm's Fairy Tales," a collection of European folk tales first published in 1812 by German brothers Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm.     Most of us grew up reading these fairy tales but they had been toned down as the original ones were too graphic. I do not think kids hear the words as they are stated. Like in “Little Red Riding Hood” the wolf ate the grandmother…..ooh how awful but kids like the way the story ends and that is good so they do not dwell on grandma’s fate. All the tales are like this ...

Nasturtiums….So Pretty and Edible too. I just love Nasturtiums when I see them growing. There are three types; vines, dwarf and variegated leaves plus they come in 4 colors. I couldn’t find any plants but the home improvement stores sell the seed packets. I bought two packages; about 100 seeds. I soaked the seeds and planted them in sprouting boxes. They all sprouted and then died off. I had just given up and then this morning I noticed one plant was growing in my spouting pot. It is so beautiful and is blooming. The flowers are edible and  have a peppery taste similar to watercress plus the bright colors will perk up a salad or pasta. Here is a recipe to share.   Nasturtium Lemon Butter This lovely butter has a mild lemon/pepper flavor and a colorful appearance. It is wonderful on fish...

Be Careful of Deer Running on the Road…. Cute but so Dangerous   I live in the foothills and the city has put up a green chain link fence just south of my home to keep the wildlife from getting hit by cars. I used to love to drive home late at night and see them standing on the side of the road but I am sure keeping them safe is so important and the land they are on is protected and there is no deer hunting in this area ever. So yesterday, as I am coming home in the afternoon, this deer is running down the road about 25 mph full throttle and seemed scared. Then it stopped and made a u-turn and almost ran down a bicyclist who was just trying to get out of her way. She made two more u-turns and then she settled down and ran down a dirt driveway.   Several cars were dodging her too and jus...

We Gave Away 500 Turkeys Today     Last night it was pouring rain but people got in line beginning around 1:00 a.m. to wait for the “Free Turkey” and all the fixings. They lined up at the Habitat for Humanity building in Loma Linda, CA.                 Our Association of Realtors has been planning this event all year. The Morongo Indians donated 1250 turkeys to our association and we did fundraisers all year to buy the fixings.                             We started handing out the food at 8:30 a.m. and it was a joyous event. I was on the “Corn Detail” and here is a picture of the rest of my team. We took turns handing out the corn cans so we would have a chance to wish everyone a “Happy Thanksgiving” as they came through the line.               Minister Turley was here to wish everyone...
