The Los Angeles-Mt. Washington Railway is no more; but it played a role in the history of Highland Park and Mt. Washington and deserves mention here. The railway operated over a distance of 2,900 feet, pulled by a cable under wood planking and was created as a gimmick to stimulate land sales for the Mt. Washington Development Company. The powerhouse for the incline railway was located on the grounds of the Mt. Washington Inn, now the International Headquarters of the Self Realization Fellowship. The powerhouse contained the grip wheel which pulled cars along the moving cable under the planking. Two cars, named Florence and Virginia, operated simultaneously, one leaving at the foot of the hill and the other heading down the mountain from the inn. At mid-point in the 2,900 foot route, th...

What goes down must come up. It seems to me that the East Side Los Angeles market is heating up in equal proportion with the summer weather. I've written 8 offers in the last 10 days for 8 different buyers on 8 different properties and not one of them has yet been countered or denied or even responded to. WTF are you loss mitigator/asset manager types doing all day long?? Some of these banks are getting the hint that to sell a property quickly you need to underprice it and let it get bid up. When writing offers over asking price as is necessary on nearly all of these underpriced REO's, the question becomes how high to go. No one wants to drop more than necessary even for a great value. The way it seems to be occuring is that the bank will take a certain number of offers and let them al...

First, let me preface this by saying:  Did you see what waltarrrrr did with his Flickr Photo Group "Highland Park Survey 2008"  It is a collection of photos all taken in zip code 90042 during the final week of 2008. Well, coincidentally, I have ascended to the position of moderator for the 90065 Mt. Washington Flickr Group.  I ascended to the position because everyone else left.  :-) Presently the group has two photos.  And two members:  Me, and an attractive gentleman named Dooma Wendschuh, who is the owner and president of a production company. So here's the deal.  If you live or work in 90065, or if you simply enjoy the beautiful hillside community of Mt. Washington, could I please ask you to consider signing up for Flickr joining the group, and adding any Mt. Washington photos you m...

Measure J on tomorrow's ballot is a $3.5 billion bond for the Los Angeles Community College District. But did you realize that a YES vote on this measure possibly endangers the Southwest Museum by turning the Museum into a campus?  Zuma Dogg: Why Measure J (Nov 4) Means ADIOS To The Southwest Museum And It's Billion Dollar Artifcats  Boulevard Sentinel  (Scroll down to the 14th article) On the other hand Los Angeles Times takes the YES position and, curiously, although the article was posted in October, there are no comments.  Could it be that some comments have been deleted?  Did any Southwest Museum supporters try to comment there? The morning is cold.  At least "cold" to us Southern Californians. The air is dry, parched dry; chaffing the skin. Harsh biting winds whip down from the foothills. The canyons burn.

Two homes in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles are featured on the Valley Solar Amigos "The Good Life is Green" tour, part of the American Solar Energy Society Solar Tour taking place October 4 and 5. The featured homes are located at 4339 San Rafael Avenue and 4113 Sea View Avenue.   The ASES National Solar Tour is the largest grassroots solar event in history. While energy prices continue to soar, this event offers participants the opportunity to tour homes and buildings to see how neighbors are using solar energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies to reduce their monthly utility bills and help tackle climate change.
