Founded in 1888 by the Superintendent of Southern Pacific Railroad, Jerome A. Fillmore, Fillmore had less than a 100 residents back then.  The residents and the town were sustained by the "Orange Rush" of the late 1800's and the commercial production and distribution of oranges by what would eventually become Sunkist Growers.  Fillmore's first orange packing house was built and purchased for $50.   Today, Fillmore still has a small-town atmosphere with a population of less than 16,000 residents. The nearby farms are still predominantly agriculture with most agricultural industry being related to orange, lemon, avocado orchard farming and packing and, more recently, tree farming. The town's relatively remote location away from urban sprawl of Ventura and neighboring Los Angeles counties...

While cruising the route along the Santa Susana Mountains, passengers are treated to railway entertainment, dining and holiday festivities.   If you've never had the pleasure of taking a trip on one of the Fillmore & Western Railways, you've missed out on one of the best forms of entertainment that Ventura County has to offer.  What better time to take your maiden trip than on the North Pole Express Ride.  These events are a total blast for the whole family.  I promise you, you won't regret the time and money you spend; it's well worth it.   This year the Fillmore & Western Railways is bringing back Engine #14, their first "go green" locomotive.  The #14, a Baldwin Steam Engine locomotive was built in 1913 and has been idle for 50 years.  It has now been completely rebuilt and has been...

The new skateboard park in Fillmore is open and has been been receiving raving reviews from the skateboard crowd. Beginner or expert, they all agree that the skate park is outstanding in every way. It has taken eight years from idea to reality with a cost of $1.2 million and everyone feels that the wait and the price tag were worth it. The skate park has already gained the attention of skateboarders outside of the Fillmore community and is drawing crowds to the little town with the big park. This has been a boon to local business. Jeff Tatum, a skateboarding legend is credited with the conceptual design of the Fillmore Skate Park . The skate park, located at the corner of C and River Streets, is open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset. The Skateboard Park is part of the new 22-acre Fillmore...

Last Saturday I was previewing Fillmore homes for a buyer and passed the Fillmore Fish Hatchery sign along Highway 126 and decided to stop by for a visit.  I've been there before and it's kind of a cool place to walk around.  The signs outside fill us in on the details.  The hatchery was dedicated in 1932 and is one of 21 hatcheries managed and operated by the California Department of Fish and Game.  The Fillmore Hatchery produces approximately one million rainbow trout (about 400,000 pounds of fish) annually.  The water at the hatchery comes from four large wells and is kept at a constant 59° Fahrenheit.  The water is pumped from below the surface and afterwards it is used for agriculture.  Netting covers the concrete tanks the fish are raised in to protect them from the birds that use...

The last, best small town in Southern California. (self proclaimed, but probably true!)  Fillmore was named one of "The West's Best Cities", by Sunset Magazine, an honor given to only 24 communities in the western U.S.    Nestled in the heart of the Heritage Valley, it was founded over a hundred years ago beside a Southern Pacific railroad station and still retains the feel of a railroad town! Approximately 14,690 folks make there home here (Jan. 2004).   Today, visitors can board the Fillmore and Western historical train in Central Park, next to stately City Hall, and enjoy a leisurely, scenic ride through lush citrus groves and farms of the Santa Clara River Valley.    The historic downtown area offers a variety of shops, museums and places to eat.     Choices in housing range fr...
