Many of you will recall that Eureka, California made national news on January 10, 2010 when a 6.5 earthquake rocked the city.  We counted our own blessings, and were promptly forgotten by the rest of the world, when 2 days later when a 7.0 earthquake destroyed the country of Haiti.  We in Eureka were truly fortunate, as there were no injuries, and relatively little property damage.  My family lives in a 1902 Queen Anne Victorian home in the Henderson Center neighborhood of Eureka, and we sustained some property damage as our home rolled with the ground - lots of broken glasses, some dumped bookshelves, and our spice rack got de-alphabetized.  (tear, sniffle) Like all Californians, though, I know the "big one" is coming, so I immediately vowed to put a concrete perimeter foundation under... 10/20/2010

I'm on the Planning Commission for the city of Eureka, CA, and on Tuesday, June 1 from 2:00 - 4:00 we are looking at a city planning ordinance to deal with medical marijuana. The ordinance has 2 parts. Part 1 is about individuals with a Prop. "215" card growing their own marijuana in their own homes; it's pretty straight forward. State law and subsequent court cases say we have to allow them to grow their own pot, so the ordinance sets up guidelines about how that can be done. I encourage you to read the text of Prop. 215. The 2nd part of the ordinance, though, is more controversial.  It is after Christmas and I am still on my family vacation in Seattle, WA.  The home of Active Rain believe it or not.  Well, being on vacation and visiting my family, I have realized something important that I mostly forget during the rest of the year when I am frantically working.  I realize that we have to take time out to invest in ourselves and our families the way we put all that effort into our jobs and work because without those family moments and enjoying personal happiness, then what is the point of all that hard work? Well, it has been very nice weather for the past several weeks with no major rain storms.  I just received an update from one of my Eureka CA weather contacts that the weather is about to change.  Yesterday, the Eureka National Weather Service office advised they are expecting a rain event to move in Monday night continuing into Tuesday. Most rain will fall to the south of Humboldt County, but, we are still looking at 3-4 inches of rain possible in the Eel River Basin.  No flooding is expected and rivers may rise 3-5 feet.  It will be windy at 20-30 mph along the coast with stronger winds in exposed areas and hilltops.  There may be some localized flooding in small creeks and urban flooding near storm drains.  For the most up-to-date event information, you should monitor the NWS Eureka ... 10/09/2009

$8000 government tax credit to be allowed as downpayment assistance on fha insured mortgages Today was a good day.  I have just showed a house tonight to a couple who plan on using the $8000 government tax credit to help with their purchase. I'm happy they will be able make their offer on their first house with this help.  I have known the couple for a couple years now and they have had to keep saving and saving for their down payment, but family emergencies kept taking that dream away from them. I just got my first Iphone yesterday at the local ATT store.  I was hesitant at first becuase in my home town area of Eureka, CA in Humboldt County, ATT had just moved into our area about a year ago and I was afraid that its service would not be as good as the cell provider that I have been with for the past 4 years, US Cellular.  But all the applications that one can do with the Iphone intriged me enough to finally make the plunge and go for it.  (I still have service with my current provider, but there is a 30 day money back garantee with ATT, so if I do not like my Iphone, unlikely now, I can cancel service).  So last night and and today I have been downloading Iphone aps like crazy.  They have aps for everything! In my previous blog, I spoke about showing a house to my clients around 9:30pm.  I received a few concerns about Realtor safety that does deserve mentioning.  Thank you to everyone that has commented so far.  I think that all real estate agents should be aware of their own personal safety when showing clients around, even those clients whom they have known for a while.  Last night when I showed my buyers the house, I did bring a family member along with me just to be safe and to help lock up the house.  I would not have shown the house so late had there been a number of factors that would prompt me to do so. Well, it is after 10pm and I've just got back home after showing a few houses to my new buyers who are looking to purchase their first home in Eureka, CA.  The husband had his day off today and I was in Crescent City, CA most of the day showing houses there.  Crescent City is about an hour and a half from Eureka, so I could not get to Eureka in time before dark to meet my Eureka buyers in the day light hours.  Luckily, the couple was still interested in viewing a few new listings that fit their home search criteria.  I went to extra mile by showing them the homes this late, but I knew that the husband had to work tomorrow and could not have made it.  How about you?  Would you still show your clients houses after 9pm?    "Helping to make your dreams of home ownership come true." Craigslist and other free online marketing and advertising sites are a great way to promote your real estate listings and other items that you would like to sell.  I have been posting on Craigslist for a few years now and have received great results for my personal items to sale, and mixed results with real estate listings and rentals as well.  With that said, I have been receiving more and more Spam mail lately from having advertise on Craigslist that have nothing to do with the property listing or item that I have posted for sale!  These Spam messages say anything from "Do you need money?
