I noticed that someone typed a Google search that asked "Where is Clayton, California?"  Since I live in Clayton, California - and believe wholeheartedly that it is the BEST place imaginable - I am going to answer that question. Clayton California is located in Contra Costa county of northern California.  Contra Costa and Alameda counties are commonly referred to as "East Bay" because it is across the Bay from San Francisco.  If fact, if you start in San Francisco, you would take Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for 36 minutes to the city of Walnut Creek.  From Walnut Creek, drive 7 miles east to Clayton.  For a good visual, check out this Google Map. Clayton is the perfect place to live.  Although only a stone's throw from major metropolitan areas, it is a community-oriented city surround...

One inspection that home buyers often choose to waive - and shouldn't - is the Sewer Lateral Inspection.  Why is a Sewer Lateral Inspection important?  A homeowner is responsible for the maintenance of the sewer lateral (the sewer line) from their home to the sewer main at the center of the street.  This can be a very expensive repair. The sewer lines in many Contra Costa County cities (including Alamo, Concord, Clayton, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek) are made of clay and are reaching the end of their intended useful life.  Some additional problems include:   Clay pipes are not sealed at the joints allowing the tree and bush roots to infiltrate the line and block the flow of the sewer pipe. The photo to the left shows a sewer that is more than 60% b...

I just came across this story in the Clayton Pioneer.  Sherrie Henderson of TLC Pet Grooming in Clayton has been working very hard to rescue 18 dogs ranging from 1-5 years old, all pure bred Beagles.  The dogs have been used in labratory tests and the lab where they were being used is done with them .  This means they are going to be put to sleep.  The dogs were scheduled to be put to sleep at the end of January, Sherrie was able to get an extension through February.  10 of the dogs have been adopted, there are 8 still available.  We only have until the end of February, please act fast.  According to Sherrie, the only thing wrong with these dogs is that they are used to living in a cage, therefore are not yet potty trained.  Sherrie does not even know which lab the dogs are in, however ...

Staging-It's all in the Details. It's always interesting to watch a rehab and staging of a property.  The work is done, it's beautifully neutral and a blank slate for the staging crew to make magnificent.  You begin to put in the furniture and the rooms fill with promise.  Then you look around and it's all still a bit bland.  In the staging team it is not unusual to have one of the team who gets the BIG picture, others  get the details.  Have a great team that combines those and you end up with phenomenal staging.  When we walked into this living room after staging, it looked oh so nice, but it needed just a little something to tie it all together.  And little it was, but the result was finished.  What do you think?  Show us some of your DETAILS!!!  (The frosting on the cake, the finish...

According to the Clayton Pioneer a rare white hummingbird has been spotted in Clayton California.  Read the entire article by clicking here. According to the hummingbird website www.RubyThroat.org this is extremely rare.  Couple things I learned while visiting www.RubyThroat.org were that hummingbirds are rarely seen in Europe and those are birds that have escaped captivity.  I had no idea they didn't have hummingbirds in Europe. I also learned about hummingbird moths, which apparently act so exactly like a hummingbird that they are often mistaken for baby humming birds.  Hummingbirds do not leave the nest until fully grown, so you won't see a baby one flying around anywhere. I just thought that was interesting, and it did remind me to fill my hummingbird feeder.  : )

In Search of the Elusive Blue Pumpkin! Last week I wrote about Blue Pumpkins and how great they are for cooking.  Some people thought I was joking.  Well Sunday I hauled my Five Pumpkins off to the Pumpkin Patch.  The farm on Clayton Valley Road is currently in it's Pumpkin Patch mode before being turned into the Christmas Tree Farm.               The boys got to play in the Hay Maze, the Bean Pools (Giant Plastic Tubs filled with Beans) and do rubber duck races at the water pumps.  The littler boys went on the Train Ride.  Dad bought them all some Kettle Corn and then we picked out the Pumpkin.     We got one Orange one (to carve) and two big Blue Pumpkins for cooking. A good time was had by all and Dad was allowed to fall asleep peacefully in front of Sunday Night Football as his rewa...

Clayton, CA a fabulous small city nestled beneath our gorgeous Mt. Diablo State Park .  So much to offer in Clayton. I know, because it is where I call home myself!  Just in the last month or so in Clayton we've seen our own Oktoberfest, Labor Day soapbox derby, a weekly Farmer's Market and our bi-weekly Music in the Grove.  Our walking trails are consistently voted TOPS, and Clayton itself is on the list of America's BEST CITIES to live in! Oh, and you'll often horses and riders walking thru town (or tied up behind the local saloon), coyotes roaming around and wild turkeys galore - seemingly unaware Thanksgiving is, oh, but a month away!  For dining, playing, relaxing and living, you couldn't find a better place than Clayton, CA.  Check out www.CNNMoney.com for more on the Best Places ...

I have received dozens of phone calls from California home owners as a result of my post Clarification Regarding California Non-Recourse mortgages. Based on these phone conversations, I have come to the conclusion that there is a very frightening trend:  real estate professionals (both loan officers and real estate agents) are offering advice based on "real estate urban legends" i.e. information that has been passed from person to person and is treated FACT but is completely unsubstantiated.  Three examples of these calls are: A homeowner has lost 60% of the value on his investment property which has negative cash flow.  The mortgages (a 1st and 2nd) were refinanced so they are no longer non-recourse.  He doesn't have a hardship situation.  His loan officer told him to to stop making th...

Out in Clayton at the Clayton Valley Shopping Center, these type events are an everyday occurrence.  It is nothing to find a sports figure, children's author, children's story time, adult bookclub or other event at the bookstore.  Just like the old fashioned bookstore, it's a gathering place.  The staff and people are friendly and welcoming and we often take walks with the grandkids down to the bookstore to buy a book to further our reading efforts for the grandchildren.  It's refreshing and small town feeling.  We love our bookstore.  Tomorrow is this great event, hope you have time to stop by, you history buffs.
