The weather could not have been more beautiful today on Carmel Beach for the 56th Annual Sandcastle contest. This is an event sponsored by the local AIA members. The theme is "A Century of Memories" on this, Carmel-by-the-Sea's 100th birthday this month on October 29, 2016.As usual, the judges can be bribed--yes, you heard correctly--bribed but not with money. Contestants set up a wonderful spread for judges to munch on while they deliberate. They also tend to make up rules as they go along, so it's anyone's guess who will win this year.I went down to the beach to take photos of some of my favorites--and I went with SIZE. Anyone who can spell out "CARMEL" like that in sand has gotta be good. The other one that caught my eye is the one that spells out "Carmel-by-the-Sea" behind the actu...

Every morning is different on Carmel Beach. This morning I couldn't walk where the beach meets the ocean because of high waves. So I walked along Scenic Road at the top of the bluff that is lined with beautiful homes on one side, and a fabulous view of the ocean on the other. As I had passed the Frank Lloyd Wright House (that's it's hedge on my right) going south, pretty much where Carmel-by-the-Sea ends (how do I know, because the houses start having numbers on them rather than NAMES--no, Carmel-by-the-Sea does NOT have house numbers so each home owner gives their house a NAME),THERE WAS A BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW IN FRONT OF MEAs I turned the corner, I could see that it extended from behind the homes out over the ocean. And then part of it turned into a DOUBLE RAINBOW.Here are the various ph...

Exercise doesn't have to be boring when you walk on Carmel Beach. I used to walk from my Carmel-by-the-Sea office to the beach at the end of the day at sunset but, wow, the sunrise this morning!! The light on beach and ocean, is just magical especially this time of the year. Oh, and there a few people out and about, mostly those who are walking their dogs. Rather, the people are walking, and the dogs are having a blast running up and down that mile of beach.Below are some photos I took looking south towards the Frank Lloyd Wright house. Photos were taken within a few minutes virtually from the same spot, unless a wave chased me up the beach. Don't you just love the way the waves come in and change the sand's reflection of the light.WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE? Mine is the one at the top, ab...

I should probably start this post with the END of the day when I trudged wearily back to my office here in Carmel-by-the-Sea and saw this heart hanging in the back of a cypress tree, sort of hidden between the tree and a fence. I just saw a flash of color and went to investigate. At first I thought someone had lost it but, looking more closely, there was a tag saying:"I NEED A HOME." Do you know that there is a group out there with a website called www.ifoundaquiltedheart.com and they even have a Facebook page #ifaqh - I'll link this blog off to them just to thank them for my heart. You are not the only one, heart. MY CLIENT IS LOOKING FOR A HOME TOOAnd that's what I had been trying to do for a first time buyer all day, someone close to retirement who had NEVER owned her own home EVER. ...

What are people thinking when they watch a sunset? I have viewed hundreds of sunsets in my life along with many sunrises, and I know when I view a sunset there are many thoughts going through my mind.  I know that when I view sunsets the first thing that comes to mind is the beauty of the sun, the clouds, colors and knowing that when the sun sets and darkness falls that daylight has ended.  The thoughts that go through my mind are different depending on where I am watching the sunset, what is going on in my life, if I am alone or with someone. If I am watching a sunset alone, it can a lonely feeling wondering why I am watching the sunset alone.  And when I am watching the sunset with the one I love it can be romantic or with family members it can be a day filled with laughter, fun and ...

Carmel-by-the-Sea is planning a full day of events on October 29 to celebrate it's 100ths birthday. If you haven't made your plans yet to come, now is a good time. The day's activities start with a parade through the business district. Although through the years, there has been a parade on Carmel-by-the-Sea's birthday, it always had a Halloween motif. Even dogs got into the act with spooky costumes. But not this year, this year Upbeat Parade Productions, well known in California and Nevada,  has been hired to coordinate the whole affair. According to the organizers, the parade lineup is set in stone, including float sponsors and local organizations and schools set to walk in the event. There will also be four bands including the United States Navy Band from San Diego and the Monterey Pip...

Yesterday was the second time that nineteen artist owned galleries here in Carmel-by-the-Sea had their "Second Saturday Every Month" art walk from 5 to 8 PM.Usually, galleries close around 5 or 6, so this makes it very nice for visitors to Carmel to come and meet the artists themselves and maybe enjoy some light refreshments and nibbles. Some of the artists, like Mary Titus, even paint while the public wanders around the gallery. Her gallery is in a building owned by Clint Eastwood and, of course, we always ask how her "landlord" is.It was especially fun for me to walk around to get more acquainted with the artwork of some of artists who have recently opened their studio such as Stephen Sanfilippo of the Cypress Coast Gallery. It's tucked away in a courtyard between San Carlos and Missi...

There are so many wine tasting rooms in Carmel-by-the-Sea that the Chamber of Commerce now has a Wine Walk By The Sea for which one can purchase a Passport. To find out more, please go to their website www.carmelcalifornia.orgWhat is a wine tasting room, you might ask?Yesterday, I went to City Hall here in Carmel-by-the-Sea to find out. Here is what it boils down to:"A wine tasting room is a stand-alone establishment with a Duplicate Type 02 ABC license, in which the primary purpose is to encourage patrons to purchase wine for off-site consumption."Makes sense, right? However, not just any winery can open a wine tasting room in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Only wines originating from Monterey County Vineyards and Wineries are encouraged to apply. That means, all wines displayed and offered for sal...

The day before the Concours d' Elegance in Pebble Beach, it seems that everyone with an expensive car is here. There is no distinction, they are just plain that: expensive.People are walking up and down Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, our main street, looking at them. Your ordinary everyday car should not even get near this street today, you would feel, well, you know. This is the day to show it off, and you really need one to show off. Competition is stiff. Naturally, everyone wants to park it on Ocean Avenue too so people can admire it. Maybe that's why they drive around and around town like they do in Manhattan, they just don't want to leave it on a mere side street. Although these are packed with formidable cars as well.AND THAT'S WHERE I FOUND THIS RED CARPET TREATMENT...LITERAL...

Touted as the "world's premier celebration of the automobile", the renowned Concours d' Elegance comes to the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links this Sunday, August 21, 2016.Only the most beautiful and historic are invited to come to this event. But before they do, many of them actually get on the road here on the Monterey Peninsula and end up here in Carmel-by-the-Sea so that their owners can partake at a luncheon in Devendorf Park.So while the owners are hobnobbing with each other, the rest of us are looking at their cars--if you can even call them that. Bruno's, the famous deli here in Carmel-by-the-Sea says it best with his parking sign:And here are some of these historic cars that just blow your mind. Remember, there were 6 blocks of these antique cars, 2 side by side. Unb...

August is my favorite month in Carmel-by-the-Sea because car aficionados come from all over the world to gaze on, auction/bid for, judge, and drive some of the worlds finest luxury cars, muscle cars, hot rods and sporting cars.Car manufacturers hold private showings and corporate events at such luxury Carmel Valley resorts as Quail Lodge and Stonepine.Car owners of the latest and greatest models tend to bring them to Carmel-by-the-Sea and park them in normal parking spaces around town to be admired. And admired they are by thousands of people who come to the Monterey Peninsula for Concours Week. You will see luminaries from the entertainment, Fortune 500, sports world and every other walk of life admire the cars and each other. Yes, fashions along the Avenue are much admired, as are the ...

Well I knew it wouldnt be long before certain states would start ripping people off once again. And what better place to start this rip off then in California.I have only been in California for one week (7 days) and I have seen gas prices go up 3 different times ;o) The cheapest prices are approx. $2.50 per gallon and Chevron prices are around $2.70+ ... I am predicting by the 4th of July gas prices in California will be back at around $3.50 give or take. And just another reason to purchase a Hybrid or electric car.SHAME ON THE OIL COMPANIES AND CERTAIN STATES AND CITIES THAT CONTINUE TO RIP US OFF

My home town made the list. Carmel Beach is gorgeous all year round! Click on the link to view the rest: Carmel-By-The-Sea is a seemingly pretentious city with a median home sales price well over one million dollars. The people are very friendly however and it’s a great place to visit. Some of our favorite beaches are in or nearby Carmel. The City Beach offers bright white sand and lots of space to spread out on. It’s a great spot to watch sunsets from and small beach fires are allowed on the south end.http://www.californiabeaches.com/map/top-10-best-beaches-in-california-2016/ And so did Pebble Beach. I am so lucky to live in such a gorgeous and unique place. While there are several beaches named Pebble Beach in California, this one is probably the best of them. It’s not very hidden fro...

The San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission located at Carmel by the Sea Monterey Peninsula California is such an amazing place.   I have been traveling to Carmel by the Sea for so many years now, and this was the very first time that Alaska Bob has ever been inside.     Last Saturday 9-26-2015, I took these wonderful photos of what some call the Carmel Mission for short. And for anyone that spent time at Carmel by the Sea and haven't had the chance to step inside the mission, take a look inside next time.     Robert Alaska Bob Swetz spent over one hour taking photos of paintings, statues, buildings and more.
