Many Marines pass an important historic treasure on their daily commute to work and may not even know it. Along Campus Pendleton's Vandergrift Boulevard stand one of California many historic El Camino Real Bells that has been around long before any Marine or sailor occupied the land. The bell symbolizes the trails use by the Franciscan Padres on the journey to Northern California from Mexico in the 1800's.   The Padres were Catholic priests sent by the King of Spain to convert Native American of California to Catholicism in order to become citizens of Spain. El Camino Real Spanish for "The Kings Highway " was the trail used by the Padres that begins in San Diego in what is know known as Presidio Park and end in Sonoma, California at Mission San Francisco de Solano. Why Rent to a Military Family - Character, Pay and Supervision - Camp Pendleton, San Diego, 29 Palms and Beyond A military family may get orders to leave in months, short of a year, and will get orders to leave in one, two or three years, and then my rental home will be vacant.  That is the main concern with renting to a military family. This is my experience with many investors' properties as well as our own; it is not scientific, it is anectdotal, and I hope it is helpful in doing your homework as an investor.   FEWER MILITARY FAMILIES RENTING in March 2010 Right now in the Camp Pendleton area, the Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) is actually higher than market rents in certain neighborhoods of Temecula, Murrieta and surrounding areas.  That means a military family can afford to buy for ...

It’s fall in San Diego, right? Here we go again: More than 1000 acres of land on Camp Pendleton goes up in flames, after a wildfire breaks out on the base Wednesday. If you want to follow the action, check out this Twitter feed and this blog.  Social media are the 21 century version of the ham radio operators. Twitter played a big role during the 2007 San Diego Wildfires; it should be even more useful this year. Think good thoughts for and send out prayers to Unchained graduate Don Reedy tonight. He’s in the eastern path of the fire.   Originally posted on Bloodhound Blog

I grew up as a military brat, but we never had the good fortune to be transferred to the San Diego area. Had that happened, I don't think we would have wanted to ever leave. What can you expect here?Your home will likely be smaller than where you have lived before, because housing costs are higher here.  But once you have digested that negative, you can consider all the positives:1. A fabulous year-round climate. Smaller home? You'll be spending more time outdoors!2. Entertainment costs should go down. San Diego has all sorts of free attractions: Beaches, mountains, public parks and even some free outdoor concerts. There are plenty of things to do with kids in San Diego, too. 3. Food costs should also drop. Much of our produce is grown locally and the San Diego area Farmer's Markets are ...
