"Vacation" means going to Kamloops for the weekend Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a snowplow on the highway You measure distance in hours You know several people who have hit deer, moose, or bear more than once You often switch from "heat" to "A/C' in the same day You use a down comforter in the summer, but can walk outside barefoot in the winter to grab a beer off the porch You see people wearing hunting clothes at social events You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked You think of the major food groups as moose meat, fish and berries There are seven empty cars running in the parking lot at the Canadian Tire store at any given time You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit Driving is better in the winter...

Most people assume that the sales of raw land in the winter doesn't happen. Especially in my area of the world where the actual land is under 5 feet of snow. This is not necessarily so - many buyers are looking for property at this time of year so that they can begin building in spring once the snow is gone. My husband and I purchased our acreage lot one December and there was a lot of snow that year - we are extremely happy with our property. I just sold an acreage, and again this year there is tremendous amount amount of snow.So here are my tips to buying land that you "can't see". Get as much information about the property that you can from your Realtor® Try to look at aerial photos of the land (google maps etc. In Prince George you can also go to PGMap to see photos of properties wit...

As every day, week go by I find the news media becoming more inaccurate with their facts and I don't see a real good reason why. For the record in Prince George the MLS stats for single family homes on the market here as of Oct.30, 2008 is 487 homes! Not the 800 to 1000 you will hear out there. Prince George is in a great position to recover ahead of most other places in BC or in Canada for that matter. Unlike the bigger centers Prince George builders never over built and most of the previous sales and future will remain in the resale category. The next 6 months will be a fantastic time for buyers as it is a buyers market and the investors that buy here as well can still get a positive return on their money. Where the stock market people are happy to get 1% to 5% return you can still fin...

I was lucky enough to have been contacted by a lady in Germany to list five bare land acreages in my city which she needed to sell. She owned 3 in joint with her late husband and 2 were in his name only.  I believe she found me through Activerain, but she had no idea that I spoke German (hmmm perhaps this is something I should start promoting?).  She was very surpised and happy to find we could correspond in her native language. www.3DFlags.com Now German is actually my first language but I have spoken mostly English for my entire life.  I haven't spoken German for a good 24 years and I certainly am out of practice.  Needless to say, working with this client has been challenging and satisfying all at the same time. To add even more into the pot, I have had to deal with estates and proba...

I was recently contacted by a lady from Florida who had purchased some property from a government land auction in the US near my city in northern British Columbia.  She had fallen on some hard times and needed to sell this lot very quickly, so she contacted me to list it for her.  She provided me with the legal description but I could not seem to find the location of the property.  It was odd that the property was a small city sized lot and I could tell that it was located north of the city where most properties are acreages.  I finally resorted to dropping by the Regional District's office to have them show me on the map exactly where this particular lot was located.  I was in shock!  The parcel the lady purchased was located in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!  Apparantly the railway had subdiv...

I'm so proud of my family, we have managed to reduce and recycle our way down to ONE SMALL BAG of garbage a WEEK! Our family of four did it and so can you!  Here is the way how: RECYCLE There are bins around the City of Prince George and the Landfill to recycle newspaper, cardboard, misc paper, milk jugs and tin cans.  Keep a separate bin in your garage or carport to collect these items and bring them for recycling weekly. Bring your drink bottles and cans for recycling - you have already paid a deposit on them, so you can collect the money back plus you are keeping good recyclables out of the landfill. Many of the bottle depots around town also collect glass jars (clean, no lids, can keep labels on), milk and juice cartons.  BBK Depot is also accepting old television and computers. Lon...

Major developments throughout the province are creating opportunities for local companies to showcase their expertise, grow their business and expand into new markets. Rio Tinto Alcan is in the final stages of planning the $2 billion Kitimat Works Modernization Project which will make its Kitimat smelter one of the three largest smelters in North America. Kitimat's aluminum production capacity would increase by 125,000 tonnes, using clean and renewable hydroelectric power and reducing GHG emissions by half a million tonnes per year. Rio Tinto Alcan is working to ensure that as much purchasing is done in Northern BC as possible, and has provided the opportunity for local businesses to register as suppliers of goods and services required for the expansion project. Companies can register ...

A new hot water community energy system has been proposed for our city. With this system, a central heating plant uses pellets, or biomass fuels to heat the water, which is then distributed to various building for space heating and domestic water heating. Two major benefits: Each building does not need its own boiler or furnace, and renewable fuels can be used. Thus, this would allow our community to be more environmentally friendly, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, as well as more cost effective. Prince George is an excellent candidate for a hot water community energy system BECAUSE: Relatively Dense Downtown Core; A Large Number of Publicly Funded Buildings in Close Proximity; A Large Amount of Biomass Available in the Region; Natural Gas Costs are Volatile; Energy Dollars Are...

I was surprised to read in the local paper that prices have gone up this quarter compared to the same period in 2007 by 6% according to the BC Norther Real Estate Board. The number of sales of singe family homes had declined during the first three months of 2007.  This is not surprising as the market is definately not as active this spring (yet).Between Jan. 1 and March 31, 193 single-detached houses were sold, down from the 243 in 2007. The average price of a home sold during the first quarter of this year was $246,839, up from $232,951 last year. You can read more about this at the Prince George Citizen.

On March 29, my family and I partook of the Earth Hour observance of turning off our lights for one hour from 8-9pm.  In fact we left the lights off all evening. This act was not to save money or to make a difference in worldwide power consumption as many people believe.  It was done to create awareness that we are consuming the earth's resources and are contributing to global climate change.  It was an event to symbolize that people worldwide can work together in an effort to fight climate change. The statistics are out in regard to energy savings, and I am disappointed to say that Prince George the worst reduction of 'savings' in the province of British Columbia.  We managed a whopping 0.2% of electricity, while the provincial average was 2%.My family and I will continue to save energy ...

Easter is almost here and I have been dyeing eggs. This year I'm using natural dyes and have found them just as easy, (not quite) as colourful, and healthier than artificial dyes. Here is what I did:I gathered up my dye ingredients. I used blueberry juice, turmeric and spinach for this batch.Eggs were placed in a pan (single layer) with enough water to cover and added one tablespoon of vinegar to the water.I then added my dyes. I didn't use any exact measures - just enough for what I figured would be effective. I think I put in 2 tsp of turmeric.Bring the pans to a roiling boil and then simmer for 30 minutes. Rinse the eggs and then use some vegetable oil to polish.Final product: - as you can see the turmeric and blueberry juice worked very well. The spinach did turn the eggs a very pale...

His name is Larry and he followed me home - hitchhiked actually.I did some shopping and decided to purchase some indoor plants for the house at Home Depot. Our old place was so dark, I wasn't able to keep any plants alive. This home was build with very large windows for passive solar energy, plus is south facing - very bright and sunny indeed.I found a large Mass Cane at the store that I picked up. My daughter squealed in delight when she saw it.  There was Larry attached to the side of the plant! Considering I have about a meter of snow (3 ft) in my yard, and snails are not indigenous to our area - I am not able to send him out. I guess I got two for one - a new plant and a new pet!
