Southern Gulf Islands, British ColumbiaBritish Columbia's Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast communities are drawing more and more people who want a piece of the stunning physical beauty, gentle climate, and rural charm.  Steadily increasing demand for land in these areas is resulting in higher property values and taxes. More development also means more pressure on sensitive island ecosystems that are frequently home to rare and endangered species. The Natural Area Protection Tax Exemption Program (NAPTEP) is a property tax incentive program designed to encourage landowners to protect the natural features of their land.  Launched by the Islands Trust and the Islands Trust Fund in 2005, NAPTEP got a facelift in early 2008 in response to landowner feedback. I encourage all island landowners ...

Another one of my random photos from my Pender Island/African Photos page.  Here we have the Pender Island Highlanders performing for the Canada Day celebration.  In the background you will also see our island RCMP officer dressed in full regalia for the occasion. It is so great to live in a small community like the one here on Pender.  Celebrations like Canada Day take on a whole different meaning when you gather with a group of friends to take some time off and enjoy each others' company -- rather than running off to the mall to get some shopping in on a statuatory holiday.  (Not that we don't sometimes take a day to go off island and get some errands accomplished -- I just find that I take more easy days here on Pender than I did in my "previous life.")Although February is sadly void ...

Happy New Year to all of you!We had a great time bringing in 2008 here on Pender Island.  This year's Magic Lake Lantern Festival has been described as one of the best in its 9 year history.  This is thanks to the hard work of so many performers and volunteers.  I wish I had some pictures to post, but I was assigned to crowd control duties this year, and didn't get a chance to get my camera out.  Not to say that crowd control is a tough assignment here on Pender!  We're hardly an unruly bunch...To see pictures of Lantern Festivals from the past, please see my Photo Album. We had the largest number of people join the Lantern Procession this year.  I saw lots of families walking together with their homemade bamboo and paper mache lanterns, leading in the the Giant Puppets, Masked Performer...

Background: The Magic Lake Lantern Festival is a Pender Islands tradition that takes place every New Year's Eve. Giant Puppets, Bamboo Lanterns, Stilt Walkers, an enchanting shadow play and Kayak Ballet on the lake are only some of what entertains and delights residents and visitors alike just after dark falls on December 31. Pagan in nature, it is a truly unique family event whose fame is just starting to spread beyond its Gulf Island home. As indicated in the letter below, due to an unexpected shortfall of funds, the producers of the event, the Three on the Tree Productions Society, finds itself doing some last minute fundraising to ensure this year's event goes ahead, and to secure the future of the Magic Lake Lantern Festival for Pender Island in the years to come. If you would lik...

Great progress has been made on the health centre expansion over the past couple of months. The sub-floor is complete, the walls are all up, and the roof trusses installed. In the first 2 weeks of November, the roof was sheathed, and a new metal roof is currently being installed over the expansion and existing building. The windows and doors are going in, and the outside siding and trim will soon be complete. Work is progressing on time and within budget. The inside work will continue over the winter months, including the electrical, plumbing and the heating/air exchange systems. The Pender Islands Health Care Society estimates that at least another $250,000 will be needed to complete the expansion as planned in Summer 2008. Thank you to everyone for their donations of time and money to...

This month, the Pender Islands' Health Care Society (PIHCS) announced that they have completed negotiations with Dr. Michael Thompson to fill the vacancy left by Dr. Hudson's recent departure.  Dr. Thompson will be moving to the island with his wife Sandra late this year, and will begin practising at the clinic on January 14.  Dr. Michael brings with him an extensive background in family medicine, having worked in Shawnigan Lake, the Queen Charlottes and the NATO airbase in Germany, providing primary medical care to families stationed there.  We are fortunate to have such an experienced physician choose to relocate to our little island! Many thanks go out to Dr. G. Moore, who will continue to single handedly "man the fort" until mid January.

The Pender Islands Parks Commission announced this month the creation of Ursula Poepel Park in Magic Lake Estates on North Pender Island, BC.  The park has been made possible by Ursula's generous donation of an undeveloped .8 acre lot on Schooner Way.  The new park provides an environmental corridor between Schooner Way and Chart Drive, and has been gifted to the CRD for protection in perpetuity as an environmentally sensitive site. The site is an older second growth forest, with some first growth trees, and contains Douglas Fir, Arbutus and Cedar Trees.  A very large veteran Douglas Fir on the property provides a recognized alternate nesxting site for eagles.Ursula, along with 11 other individuals from the Gulf Islands, was recently nominated for Islands Trust Community Stewardship Awar...
