On Saturday, September 20 from 7am to 1pm, the City of Surprise will be sponsoring its annual "Sept. 20 Clean-Up Event".  Everything except for hazardous waste can be disposed of at the Northwest Regional Landfill and its FREE FREE FREE - to Surprise residents only.  You will just need to show your proof of residency in the City of Surprise (Drivers License or Electric Bill).  A single load can weigh up to 2,000 pounds at no cost, but NO construction materials. There are so many restaurants in the Surprise Arizona area that I decided to break them down into two maps. The first map gives you more of the fine dining options. Most of these are national chain restaurants but there are a few in the mix by local entrepreneurs. In some cases I've used the term "fine dining" loosely. Some of these restaurants are more like a Denny's, offering a wide variety of dishes. The second map shows you most all of the areas fast food restaurants and pizza joints. SURPRISE!  After many months of watching there is a BIG sign posted on Bell Road and the word is out.  Surprise Arizona is full of surprises!  It's a bank, no it's a dry cleaners, no, but it's the FORTH for the little city of Surprise..........it's .......... a...........MCDONALDS!  Yes, Surprise will have another McDonald's built in the center of the city. Did you know Surprise, Arizona was named after developer Homer C. Ludden's hometown of Surprise, Nebraska? Well, as a resident, in the next couple of years you will probably be hearing more about the history of our city. The City of Surprise, AZ is turning 50 in the year 2010. In order to commemorate the big anniversary they are asking residents to participate. If you have old photos, newspaper clippings or stories to tell about our fair city, organizers would like to include them in a history book or video. The signs are up.  Dirt is being moved about and the property is being excavated.  Is it coming soon?  Good question.  A couple of days I saw two signs labeled Brunswick Zone XL is coming and space available. The signs were posted on the vacant lot on the northeast corner of Reems and Waddell.  I've asked many nearby residents and there seems to be conflicting reports.  I've also done some internet research and did not find anything specific to the location of the first Surprise Arizona bowling alley.  Reems and Waddel is an excellent location since it is in the heart of Surprise. Surprise Arizona is one of the fastest growing cities in Maricopa County and it has a SECOND brand new school opening tomorrow morning!  It's named Desert Moon Elementary School and is located on the corner of Pat Tillman Blvd and 166th Avenue in Surprise. Surprise Arizona has a brand new school that will be opening tomorrow.  Located on the corner of 171st Avenue and Bajada Road, the Desert Oasis Elementary School will open their doors tomorrow morning for the first time.  It is projected that around 400 students will be in attendance (Kindergarten to 6th grade).  I believe that this is the first school in the City of Surprise that is part of the Nadaburg School District.  The school mascot is the roadrunner which is a delightful bird for anyone to watch.   Teachers were scurrying about this morning as they worked on getting their new classrooms ready for tomorrow's grand opening.  The play grounds have brand new equipment.  I can only imagine the school children in the morning walking into a brand new classroom with the latest upgrades ... 08/10/2008

We've waited and waited.  Promises were made and it seems as though the time has passed very slowly. Finally, the time has come!  Beginning August 11, the westbound lanes of Bell Road from Parkview to just east of the Loop 303 will be resurfaced.  The eastbound lanes on Bell Road from Parkview to Grand Avenue will also be resurfaced.  Hooray!  The ROADWORK will finally begin! According information provided at a recent Sun City Grand homeowners meeting, this means that the road will be resurfaced with some type of rubberized asphalt.  I did not post any information on the meeting until the actual City of Surprise press release was distributed.  Evidently the rubberized asphalt should decrease road noise for residents with homes that back up to Bell Road or are near to Bell Road.  The res... 08/04/2008

Have you found any flowers that bloom in the dead of night?   People who live in Arizona are referred to as a "Zoni".  Because of the cooler weather, "Zoni's" love San Diego!  However, most "Zoni's" who work just prefer to head to northern Arizona every Friday to enjoy the cool pines.  The trip from Surprise (Sun City Grand) takes about 2 hours.  Leaving the 100 plus degree weather and entering into the 65 degree weather is a delightful change.  The elevation is about 7,500 ft.  I found this flower blooming at about midnight last night in Northern Arizona.  I believe that this plant is indigenous to Arizona and can be found above 6,000 ft. in altitude.  It grows on a vine and requires a substantial amount of water because I found it in creek beds.    One of our neighbors told us about t... 08/03/2008

The City of Surprise is one of the fastest growing cities in Maricopa County, Arizona.  Every day there are new building signs being erected.  Construction is on the rise and will continue to proliferate since the West Valley is probably the best viable option for growth in Maricopa County.
