One has to be cognizant of the weather each and every day. To be accurate, this statistic needs to be recorded on a daily basis. My husband decided to take on this project for one year to see how accurate the claim was. Many areas that boast high tourism and lots of sunshine claim this statistic. But there was an inner curiosity to either prove or disprove the claim in Sedona. So the tr...

Throwback Thursday Prologue...It has been four years since I first published this.  Sedona is fortunate to have a priceless original girder from the World Trade Center.  I did some research to see how our city was able to secure this piece of history.  It turns out that our current mayor, Scott Jablow, was a police officer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at the time of the attack. Scott submitted a request for an artifact. After waiting two years, the request was granted, and our city "was entrusted with a steel girder and given the meaningful responsibility to pay tribute to all those who died that day," as Scott Jablow wrote. According to the article, this is one of approx. 1200 pieces of steel that the Port Authority has donated to various cities, police, and fire d...

UPDATE: I have shared this in the past. But I just saw a 6 part Documentary on 9/11.  You can find it on Disney Plus under National Geographic.  This is the best documentary from the people that were there.  It is so well done, the emotions come right to the surface as if you are watching this from the actual site.  It was made in conjunction with the 9/11 Memorial Site. Southern California has a very busy sky. Besides major international airports, there are airports in most cities in the Southern California area. Our home was in the path of commuter flights from Orange County to Ontario International Airport, and it was also under the vector to LAX.  Planes and helicopters were a natural sound of our environment.  Then it stopped suddenly...When the FAA shut down the airspace twenty-tw...

Sedona Weather Update July 2023As with most of the west and southwest, Sedona is experiencing some of the warmest weather we have ever experienced.  A high-pressure area over the southwest has been stagnant for days.  It is keeping the monsoon from developing over much of the state. So far, we have had 23 days over 100º.  We average around 26 days over 100º for the entire year.  Sedona has experienced nine days over 105º and a total of 21 days in a row over 100º in June/July.  This is highly unusual.  Last year (2022), the warmest day of the year was July 20 at 106º.  Today, it is already 109º and a high for the year of 111.1º.Fortunately, our morning temperatures have averaged mid to high 60ºs.  We can open the windows at night, even in these warm temps.  Humidity has averaged 27%, wit...

A Very Special Sedona Sunday Hike on June 11, 2023Last Sunday, we decided to visit a particular location that is hard to hike to in Soldiers Pass.  We waited until the afternoon to avoid the sun.  However, it was very windy as we hiked almost straight up to get to this remarkable location that holds many memories for my son.  He wanted to share that with us.  This location is right behind our cottage at the Cottages At Coffeepot in Soldiers Pass, West Sedona.  This is not a location that an average hiker would be able to locate.  We were with an experienced hiker who helped us every step of the way. It was a fabulous experience after we overcame the fear of hiking almost straight up the red rock! This Video Captures The Essence of This Unique HikeA Very Special Hike in Soldiers Pass Sedo...

LilacsIt Takes More Than April Showers...I have always loved lilacs.  However, I couldn't grow them in Southern California.  By that, I mean the lilac bushes would not flower.  When I moved to Sedona, I discovered I had flowering lilac bushes the following April.  I was so excited about this.  I didn't plant these lilacs.  They were there when we moved in.  You Need A Cold Winter For Great BloomsI am not sure where I heard that lilacs need an excellent freeze to bloom. But that is not an issue in Sedona.  We do not get days below freezing, but our weather is cold enough to allow the process to set for the next season's blooms. Lilacs are very hardy.  We had a really cold winter in 2022-23.  I didn't do anything special to protect the lilac bushes.  This year was very good for a strong f...

Happy Mother's Day!Besides spending time with friends and family,  my favorite pastime is gardening.  My lilac bushes are some of my favorite fragrant flowering plants.  More on that later in my May post. I want to wish all mothers a fabulous Mother's Day.  Enjoy your family today.  We are blessed to have this day in May when the weather is more pleasant than at other times of the year.  Get outside and smell the flowers.   Remembering our Mothers who have passed before us. SedonaAre Traffic Circles (Roundabouts) Safer and More Efficient? Coldwell Banker Realty At The "Y" Road Construction On SR 179 In 2009When the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) decided to improve SR 179, the decision to put traffic circles or roundabouts became a very local issue. Citizens were split. There were many meetings to decide the best course of action. The decision was finalized, and twelve traffic circles were put in.  Uptown 2016  - No Barriers or Traffic CirclesUptown 2023  -  With Pedestrian Barriers Just recently, two more traffic circles were added in the Uptown area, where congestion was historically an issue. What Is The Sedona Weather Like In Spring? Our First 120 Days of 2023...This shows what 6 inches of snow near the end of February 2023 looks like from my driveway…The first three months continued where the end of 2022 left off.  Sedona has had a very cold winter.  The winter (2023) brought 29.25 inches of snow through March.  There was also 14.10 inches of rain.  Needless to say, in the short term, the drought is over.  In fact, we had flooding when a warm front moved in and dropped rain which melted some of the snow in Northern AZ by Flagstaff. I read Kathy Streib's blog today, "Friday Fun."  "Today is "Pay It Forward Day". Kathy asked us to share the first thing that comes into our mind with an act of kindness that we personally experienced from someone. I encourage you to check it out if you haven't already.  As with most blogs, they can have us thinking about other things.  I remembered a couple of recent events that brought much joy to an aching heart.  I have not been touched in such a way in a very long time.  Kathy also shared with us a graphic, "Think Positive."  which led me to this. Don't Worry, Be Happy!"Don't worry, Be Happy...".  Well, I remember someone telling me that statement when things were not going well, and it always brought a smile and a change of demeanor. Many of us have had to manage operations or dep...
