The answer, Prescott, AZ.  On July 4, 1888 Prescott hosted The Frontier Cowboy's Festival.  The Rodeo has continued every day since then.  It all started in 1866, a group of Prescott businessmen came up with a July Fourth "cowboy contest" that would feature the best riders from area ranches and farms competing for a small cash prize at Whiskey Row bars.  Now the event draws thousands of people. Elk Ridge Ski Area is 65 miles north of downtown Prescott AZ.  Though Elk Ridge is not a major ski area it has some things to offer that other ski areas lack.  It is a perfect place for the casual skier. There are no crowded lift lines and several easy hills to practice on. Watson Lake is small but quite picturesque lake in Prescott. Here are a couple of photographs. Here is another photo that was taken from the Peavine Trail on the East side of the lake. The Peavine trail was made on the abandoned railroad right of way. Because the track was laid to minimize hills to make it easier for the train to operate, there is very little climbing involved on this trail. It connects with the Santa Fe Trail that runs into Prescott Valley to the east. 01/01/2011

This photo of Granite Mountain was taken on Stazenski Road near Mint Wash north of Prescott. This is one of my favorite photos of the area. The mountain in the distance is Granite Mountain. It is in the Prescott National Forest and it is also protected by being designated as a National Monument. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The photo below was made near the one above, also from near Stazenski Road. This one was taken across Mint Creek. I call it Mint Creek this time because it was flowing when I took the picture. This photo was taken in the spring before the trees leafed out. Most of the trees along the creek are cottonwood trees.  The cottonwoods are spectacular in the fall when they turn bright yellow.         12/31/2010

Many did we get a strong storm roll through here in the past few days.  The storm dropped between 6 and 14 inches in Prescott AZ within a day and a half.  The snow has stopped and the skys are clear but the cold front is still here which means very cold temperatures.  It only got  to 22 degrees F today. It is 11 degrees right now and it's supposed to drop to 3 tonight.  This is our taste of wintery weather.  The truth is that the snow will melt away in less than two weeks and temperatures will go back to the normal 40/45 or so.   It's just enough bad weather and cold to have fun then it's gone before it becomes annoying.     This picture is of downtown Prescott, right in front of the old post office.     12/31/2010

When I was growing up my dad used to take us back to eastern Oklahoma where we camped on and around the Illinois River. He seemed to want to explore every dirt road. We would be driving down a really curvey two-lane highway often near Talequah when he spotted a dirt road. "I'll bet that road goes to the river" let's go see. And off he would go. This road is in the Prescott National Forest south of Prescott. As I was walking on this road, I thought this particular scene invited me to go see just like it did for my dad. It turns out that this road does lead into the Prescott National Forest, but it does not go to the river or lead to any water at all for that matter. It does lead to a white spar. When I first came to Prescott I found a road named "White Spar." Having been connected with boats and ships slightly by being a Sea Scout when I was growing up, I assumed it was associated with spars in a ship. Such is not the case. Here is a photo of a white spar. Prescott was founded as a mining town and we had our own gold rush following the conclusion of the Civil War. A prospector spotting a white spar would immediately work the area as the quartz outcropping is oftentimes a sign of the possibility of gold being nearby. Yes, this is a great time of year to be in Prescott.  We just recieved about two inches of snow and our mountains are white.  The entire town is lit up with Christmas decorations.  There are several Christmas events going on every day. Check out  http://www.cityofprescott.net/ for local events Despite the fact that we got snow, it's pleasant to be outside.  I went for a bike ride this morning.  The air is cool but very crisp.  Come visit and soon you'll want to live here.  At least you'll be aware of a Realtor that loves this time of year.   12/23/2010

The answer, Prescott AZ.  Prescott was named the capital of the Arizona territory in 1864.  It held that status until 1867 where it was moved to Tucson.  Prescott became the capital again in 1877 and lost the capital status to Phoenix in 1889.  The first territorial capitals governor's mansion, is located at Sharlot Hall Museum grounds in downtown Prescott.  The first Territorial Courthouse building was completed in 1878.  The first courthouse was torn down in 1916 and replaced with the present day Courthouse. I visited Arcosanti which is just 35 miles east of Prescott AZ and I was amazed.  This is trully one of the best examples I can think of for future urban planning.  Arcosanti was started in 1970.  It's ideas and principles were way ahead of its time.  Now, when the nation is actually considering things like planning green and low environmental impact structures, Arcosanti makes more sense than ever.  Arcosante demonstrates how 5000 people would be able to live in harmony with minimal impact upon the eaith.  When complete, its structures will only occupy 25 acres!  Go vosit and be amazed.   check   http://www.arcosanti.org/main.html for more info 12/17/2010

The Yavapai County (Arizona) Republican Committee had an election of our delegates to the Arizona State Republican Convention. Yavapai County, Arizona is a Republican stronghold, although we are seeing a lot of Republicans re-register as Independents. We have our share of RINOs (Republicans In Name Only). Many "would be Democrats" have thought it necessary to register as Republicans in order to get elected to local offices. We have had an active TEA Party Movement here and our voter turnout at 68 percent was about 22 percent above what it was in the rest of Arizona.  Here is the article that I wrote summarizing our Freedom Rally 2 in Prescott Valley. The Acker Music Night in Prescott Arizona is my favorite event all year. The event promotes musical culture in the Prescott community. Benefactor James S. Acker wrote, "All the residue of my estate...I give to the City of Prescott to be used for parks and for promotion of music, particularly for children" J.S. Acker 1865-1955 It consists of over 100 Prescott, Arizona downtown businesses featuring a variety of musicians performing in their place of business and on the Courthouse Plaza. One of the goals is to increase funding for local youth performing arts programs. This annual event traditionally happens on the first Friday evening after the Courthouse Tree Lighting.
