Marthe Mathide Cnockaert was born in Westrozebeke, West Flanders, Belgium back in 1892 to Felix and Marie-Louise. She studied at the Ghent university school of medicine. However, her studies were interrupted when WWI started. In 1914, her home was burned down by German troops. She spoke English, German, French and Flemish. For her services, she received the Iron Cross from Germany. In 1915, she was transferred to the German Military Hospital in Roulers. It was around that time when she was approached by Lucelle Deldonck about being a spy for the British. For two years she used her cover as a nurse to spy on the Germans under the cover name of Laura.
