Emil Theodor Kocher was born in Bern, Switzerland back in 1841 to Jakob and Barbara.  The family moved to Burgdorf, he moved back to Bern where he went to middle and high school.  He started his studies in 1858 at the University of Bern.  He obtained his doctorate in 1865.  At 30 you could find him as a professor at the University of Bern.He served in that capacity for 45 years. Pauline Kirby was born in Greenwood, Mississippi back in 1905.  She attended Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee graduating in 1926.  She enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1927, assigned to Fort Sam Houston Hospital.  From 1942 to 1945 she was the Assistant Director of Nurses in the South West Pacific during WWII.After the war she was assigned to the Northington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL, moving onward to Moore General Hospital Ashville, NC.  In 1947, she was the Chief Nurse at Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, MI.  in 1954, she was transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center.  In 1957 she was recognized as one of the eight army nurses that cared for President Dwight D.
