Benjamin Hallowell was probably born in Boston, Massachusetts back in 1761, however there are no records to confirm his birth. Both of his parents were Loyalists, as such they fled to Halifax, Nova Scotia at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. In July of 1776, the family moved to England.He was educated in England joining the Royal Navy as a lieutenant in 1781. His naval career spanned the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He was one of the select group of officers referred by Lord Nelson as his “Band of Brothers”.
