William Schieffelin was born in Norfolk, Virginia back in 1908. He attended the public schools in Washington, D.C.   In 1928, he received his BS degree from Howard University. He continued his education receiving a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1933. After graduation, he taught at HBCU West Virginia State College for three years.In 1937, he received a Rosenwald Fellowship at the University of Michigan, staying there for several years. Harry Francis Chaddick was born in Chicago, Illinois back in 1902. Sorry, I don’t have any information about his parents. He started as a stock boy, then worked as an assistant pharmacist. In 1924, he bought a truck for $350.00 and entered the shipping business.He was the first to use the “piggyback” transportation, using the concept for rail shipping and trucks. He was the first to use two-way radios in his trucks. He negotiated with Jimmy Hoffa, establishing a comprehensive truck terminal on the West Side of Chicago. Charles Irving was born in Wilmington, Delaware back in 1906. He graduated from Bucknell University and Drew University. He joined the United States Army in 1936 assigned to Fort H.G. Wright. He started working as a court officer in Brooklyn. In 1986, he was transferred to the Family Court division in Manhattan. In 1989, he received a criminal justice degree for John Jay College. Just a year later he moved to San Francisco Bay Area working for the United States Marshals Service. Alfred Bird was born in Nympsfield, Gloucestershire, England back in 1811. I don’t have any information about him until 1837, so this one is going to be short, very short. In Birmingham, England he was a registered pharmacist. As a qualified druggist, he opened an experimental chemist’s shop in Bull Street, Birmingham.   His first major invention came in 1837, however it wasn’t until 1843 that invented something that is still in use to this day. Elizabeth Gould was born in Newry Co. Down, Ireland back in 1862. I only have the name of her father Joseph. I have no data as to her early upbringing but I can tell you she enrolled at Queen’s College, Belfast. She must have been one smart lady as she also went to the Royal University of Ireland, graduating in 1893.After graduation, she worked as a GP (general practitioner) in Belfast. Her patients consisted mostly of women and children. She married Hugh Fisher (date unknown), that union produced one son Hugo. During WWI, she volunteered to work for the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1916. She was put in charge of the ward in Malta. At a bus station, he saw an advertisement for the budding electronics field, so he quit his job graduating from the National Radio Institute in 1940. When he was 8 he contracted Sydenham’s chorea, for the rest of his life he had a physical tic, exacerbated by excitement or stress. His disability caused him to withdraw for public school, deciding to be home-schooled.In 1909, he enrolled at Columbia University, graduating in 1913 with an electrical engineering degree. During WWI, he served in the Signal Corps as a captain being promoted to major before the end of the conflict. Beatriz Enriquez de Arana was born in Santa Maria of Trassierra, Spain back in 1467 to Pedro and Ana. Around 1487 she met someone I’m sure you’ve heard of, (more on that in a moment). From what I’ve read she knew how to read and write, unusual for females in those days.While she never married she did have two children Diego and Ferdinand. While her lover was away she took great care of them. Queen Isabella congratulated her for her outstanding work. She died in 1536. Archie Alphonso was born in Ottumwa, Iowa back in 1888 to Price and Mary. I don’t have a time frame but the family moved to Des Moines where Archie became head custodian at the Des Moines National Bank. He went to Des Moines College where he played tackle from 1910-1912. Ada Harriet Miser was born in Somerset, Ohio back in 1847 to Henry and Ann. In 1860, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In 1867, she met and married another Henry. She attended the Old University of Chicago, which is now known as Northwestern University. She graduated in 1870.After graduation, she was passionate about the temperance and women’s suffrage movements. She founded the Band of Hope youth-oriented temperance group in Effingham, Illinois. She openly went after saloons and the patrons. In 1897, an angered saloon-keeper’s son broke into her home and attempted to shoot her, but missed and shot one of her dogs.
